(Check local listings for exact air times): The Series "Avoiding Armageddon," examines the threats posed by nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and brings viewers face-to-face with the people racing to use them. It looks at the explosive connection between terrorism and these weapons. And it asks whether the world has the ability and the will to control the weapons that - ironically - came from the best of mankind's ingenuity but have been perverted to advance the worst of mankind's instincts. The timely series is hosted by renowned journalist Walter Cronkite, and each episode concludes with a discussion on the provocative issues raised, moderated by veteran newsman Frank Sesno. "Avoiding Armageddon" airs April 14-17, 2003, at 9:00pm ET on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings). Rarely has a series been better timed to coincide with the confluence of world events. Many Americans feel that there is not a more-pressing issue in the world today than the danger of terrorism fueled by weapons of mass destruction. Capturing stories that convey these issues in compelling human terms, series producers have traveled to some of the most dangerous places in the world, such as Iraq, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Kashmir and throughout the Middle East. An ambitious outreach campaign is planned to fuel a national debate. Partnering with community, educational, retail and media organizations, extensive outreach activities will make these issues accessible to a far-ranging and diverse audience. Educational Activities Online Teachers can download lesson plans and other interactive activities to help their students understand these complex issues from the companion Web site located at www.pbs.org/avoidingarmageddon. A downloadable Discussion Guide is also available to help frame the issues for use at dining room table discussions or town hall meetings. -- Michael Hutchison 2003 Lincoln High School Distinguished Alumni Award winner 2002 ISTE Outstanding Technology-Using Educator Award winner 2002 Indiana Computer Educators Teacher of the Year Social Studies teacher Lincoln High School, Vincennes, Indiana home e-mail: mhutch@xxxxxxxxxxx school e-mail: hutchisonm@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Home Page: http://www.vcsc.k12.in.us/staff/mhutch/ice2000/default.htm *********************************************************** TECHNOLOGY AND THE PERFORMING ARTS Would you like to give your teachers a resource where they can find out how to integrate the Internet with General Performing, Cool Stuff, Dance, Theater, Circus, Costumes, Vaudeville / Burlesque, Playground / Amusements, and Special Events / Festivals <http://www.edu-cyberpg.com/Arts/resources2.html> ********************************************************** WWWEDU, The Web and Education Mailing List To access the archive, please visit the list homepage: http://edwebproject.org/wwwedu.html ************************************************************** The Net Happenings mailing list is a service of Educational CyberPlayGround - http://www.edu-cyberpg.com/ ************************************************************** If you have any questions, concerns, suggestions, or would like to sponsor the Net Happenings service - <http://www.edu-cyberpg.com/Community/Subguidelines.html> Subscribe | Unsubscribe | Change Email Preferences - <http://www.edu-cyberpg.com/Community/NetHappenings.html> **************************************************************
