In Washington, DC, a high level of lead in schools' water has made headlines.
On the other side of the country, in Seattle, Washington, parent advocates
have pushed an elementary school to provide bottled water to students until the
lead in its water supply is within federal standards. Education Week reports
that with school buildings aging faster than they can be replaced or renovated,
health advocates say lead-contaminated water is a problem for just about
every school district in the country, yet few schools conduct water-quality
tests
as a matter of course. (Unlike federal prisons and military facilities,
schools aren't legally required to do so under the federal Safe Drinking Water
Act.)
