Network security has become a necessity, since networks might not just be
the target of an attack, but the platform for future attacks against other
targets, creating liability issues. Schools often have the same security
issues as corporations, but lack the funds and expertise to protect their
systems. The Pikes Peak Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES)
provides network access for 25 servers, 2,000 desktops, and 5,000 students
in 22 school districts with a seven megabit DSL (direct subscriber line)
and a T1 line. A firewall solution would be an imperfect fit for the Pikes
Peak BOCES, since it consists of several networks, and must also perform
some content filtering and proxy caching. Some hardware solutions and a
Microsoft product proved either too expensive or inadequate for the
schools' needs. This led the administrator to use Astaro Security Linux on
a $1,500 off-the-shelf Pentium 3 server with 512 megabytes of RAM (random
access memory). Astaro also comes !
with web filtering from Cobion, which provides monthly updates to its
filter definitions, as well as anti-spam definitions, to keep up with the
changing Internet. Once the savings from keeping a cap on network use are
calculated in, the Pikes Peak BOCES saved $1,200 a month on Internet access.
