As a native Oklahoman who grew up near Tahlequah, Oklahoma (Cherokee
Nation)....I would suggest contacting the Chief of the Cherokee Nation, Chad
Smith-- or perhaps someone from his office--perhaps even someone from the
Tsa-La-Gi Museum in Tahlequah:
http://www.powersource.com/heritage/village.html
Look under the "Cultural Heritage Center" link for a phone number. The
students could call to ask for someone to speak to regarding the Trail of
Tears. (Tsa-La-Gi is a recreation of an ancient village--- they perform the
reenactment of the Trail of Tears during the summer months. The
amphitheater is where they perform the play and the village is open to
visitors during the day. This is a great field trip / historical aspect
that I was always able to enjoy while I lived in Oklahoma. I miss the
beauty of the area and the cultural influence of the Cherokee Nation.)
Website for more individuals, subjects, etc. (contacts would be available
through the online newsletter):
http://www.cherokeenation.com/
The website also offers a link to ask a "cultural specialist" questions.
The link to this is:
http://www.cherokeenation.com/Culture/HistoryCat.asp?Cat=Facts
And since the Cherokee language is still "alive," it might be of interest to
your students that they can learn how to speak Cherokee (Tsa-la-gi)---
pronounced: Chaw-la-gee -- from one of these websites:

Here's a little more to add to the information I just sent. A link to an
education director for Tsa-La-Gi. She would be a great resource for
questions (and has probably worked with students!)
