* Benkyoukai- Extensive reading and extensive listening: Two holes in
Japanese Language Teaching
1:00-2:00pm PDT
The only way to learn to do something well is to do it - not once but
thousands, even millions, of times. This is equally true whether one is
learning to play the piano, do crossword puzzles, or read and hear
Japanese. Given this truism, it's a shame that few students of Japanese
as a second or other language (JSOL) get much practice doing either. See
guest Brett Reynolds' paper at
(http://www.sabotenweb.com/bookmarks/about/43rdbenkyoukai.html
Benkyoukai will be held in the ASO.

Monday, April 26

Technology in Teacher Education (
http://www.aace.org/pubs/jtate/default.htm ), a leading journal in the

turn up the heat on publishing your work!

2:30-3:30pm PST

* Middle Level Science
6:00-7:00pm PDT
Science Standards stress that students develop critical thinking skills
and an understanding of the nature of science through hands-on learning
activities. A plethora of resources and interactive web environments are
available for participatory learning using Internet access to scientific
instruments, data and expertise. Environmental Topics and Political
Campaigns provide an opportunity for evaluation and critical thinking
for students. Jan Naher-Snowden meets with this group in the Comfy
Conference Room.

Wednesday, April 28
* Social Studies Forum - Beyond the Fire
5:00-6:00pm PDT
Imagine...You have just five minutes to leave your home and country. A
midnight raid leaves you and your siblings orphaned. Your friends are
kidnapped to become child soldier...while many in the United States
cannot imagine this happening to them, there are millions of children
throughout the world who have witnessed this firsthand.

"Beyond the Fire", a new online documentary about the real-life
experiences of teenage refugees from seven war zones, will be the focus
of the Social Studies Forum in the ASO. Joining Michael Hutchison for
this session will be Sesh Kannan, who created and produced the site.
Also joining in the forum will be Elizabeth Meyer of the Independent
Television Service (ITVS). We'll look at various parts of the site,
located at http://www.beyondthefire.net, which becomes "live" on April
15, 2004. The site will includes several forms of interactivity, lesson
plans, and an online learning and community forum.

Thursday, April 29
* Issues in Special Education: At Risk? Students with Exceptional Needs
4:30-5:30pm PDT
Students with exceptional needs (SWENs) may have experienced failure,
shame, and frustration in school so often they become disheartened and
may give up on more than just school. Others, while not quite giving up,
just barely make it from one year to the next, but with no real skill
mastery. In this discussion, we'll look at some common "coping" and
"avoidance" strategies employed by these students. Heyentah Holtzman
will discuss teaching strategies that can make a difference, and more in
the ASO. These discussions are formally informal! While there is a set
agenda, no topic is taboo, although we may elect to turn your question
into a discussion all on its own! The next discussion topic planned for
Issues in Special Education is emotional and behavioral disorders, and
we hope to have an outstanding guest speaker! Other future topics
include (in no special order): online learning for SWENs, metacognition,
mnemonics, strategies for learning, and graphic organizers. If you would
like to see a specific topic addressed, please let Heyentah know!

* Global Project Based Learning - NCLB
5:30-6:30pm PDT
Global Project-based learning refers to connecting teachers and students
to collaboratively work together on curriculum based real-world
projects. New technologies, tools and resources are emerging in
interesting ways to facilitate a global learning community. Join Linda
Ullah in the ASO in an exploration of the challenges and triumphs
involved in getting schools, teachers and students to "study" together
globally. Before joining this discussion, please take a look at:

----------------------------------------
Saturday, May 1

----------------------------------------
Sunday, May 2

use in schools from the managers' perspective (scenarios and policy
discussions). All are welcome to join us in the ASO room.
