Subject: Prof. Dev: This Week at Tapped In (April 18-24)

From: BJ Berquist <berquist@xxxxxx>

An exciting week is coming up! Join the Webheads TESOL/ESL/EFL/ELL
community on Saturday for Writing for Webheads (students) and Sunday for
Webheads in Action (teachers). On Monday, Bernie Dodge leads his monthly
WebQuests discussion, this month looking at WebQuests from Mars; and
special guest, Leyla Bulcan will discuss video streaming in the
classroom. Tuesday's events include Fred Steinbroner's Group Learning
Methods and Ferdi Serim, after a several month hiatus, returns with The
Big 6. On Wednesday Lesley Farmer presents Targeting Librarians! This
month's topic is digital imagery. Thursday's busy schedule includes Pam
Berger's WebTools and Whyville, Linda Ullah's Global Project Based
Learning, and Barbara Muller-Ackerman's School Counselor Forum. Last,
but not least, mark you calendars for Sunday, April 25. Keiko Schneider
will present Benkyoukai with guest Brett Reynolds. Tours of the many new
features of Tapped In are scheduled for a variety of time zones on most
Tuesdays and Saturdays.

After School Online (ASO) is a forum for educators. The scheduled

Monday, April 19
* WebQuests from Mars
4:00-5:00pm PDT
One way to delve into WebQuests is to take a single topic and look at
the range of ways in which it might be treated with a WebQuest. That's
the approach we'll take in this session and the topic we'll play with is
the mysterious red planet Mars. We'll look at existing Martian WebQuests
and brainstorm additional ones not yet born. Hop on your rover and join
Bernie Dodge in the ASO!

* Video Streaming in the Classroom
5:00-6:00pm PDT
How is streaming video used as a resource in the classroom? Video
streaming is a new technology that delivers "traditional" educational
video's in the classroom through an alternative method. This form of
technology is not intended to replace the use of traditional VHS video
but is being used in the classroom to compliment traditional video
libraries. As a resource tool for students, streaming video makes
homework fun for students!

There are two websites in particular that discussion leader Leyla Bulcan
would like to discuss:
http://www.tutorbuddy.com - video streaming for students that makes
homework fun!
http://www.magiclanterninsite.com - streaming video library for educators

Leyla will set up usernames and passwords for both these services and
provide them during this discussion in the ASO.
----------------------------------------
Tuesday, April 20
* Oz-Time Tours and Tips/Campfire Meeting
02:00am-03:00am PST
This tour, led by Dianne Allen, is offered at a time zone friendly hour
for Pacific Rim and Oz members and guests.

* Tapped In Tips and Tricks
2:30-3:30pm PST

* Group Learning Methods
5:00-6:00pm PDT
Join Fred Steinbroner in the ASO for a discussion about his 'work in
progress.' Fred has begun to develop a website that will include
additional resources for group and cooperative learning. See Fred's new
site at http://www.GroupLearning.org.

* The Big6 - Moving Every Child Ahead
6:00-7:00pm PDT
Moving Every Child Ahead - an alternative approach to the goals of No
Child Left Behind. Improved student achievement requires improved
classroom practice, but where is the research to guide us? Can we build
a community of "studied interventions" where groups of educators share
the evidence they generate through their daily actions with kids? Join
Ferdi Serim in the Arcade Conference Room as he leads a discussion
shaped by the Big6 process on how we might take an active, creative role
in meeting the challenges.
----------------------------------------
Wednesday, April 21
* Targeting Librarians! - Digital Imagery
4:30-6:00pm PDT
Dr. Lesley Farmer, facilitator of this discussion, coordinates the
Library Media Teacher Services Credential Program at California State
University. Join Lesley in the Hot Tub Conference Room as we talk about
Digital Imagery: Resources, Interpretation, and Changing Meaning.
----------------------------------------
Thursday, April 22
* WebTools - Whyville
4:00-5:00 PDT
We know that learning is a social experience and kids learn best in a
constructivist environment, but knowing and doing are two different
things. Is it possible to create an online environment for kids that
encourages inquiry? Join Pam Berger in the ASO to explore a virtual
community, Whyville, designed for kids ages 11 to 14 to learn science.
We'll investigate what tools and strategies this environment uses to
support active, inquiry-based learning, check out the avatars, the
funky, Seuss-like buildings and maybe a science experiment or two.

Pam has created a resource room for this group. To join Web Tools for
Education, log in to Tapped In, click on the SEARCH tab, click on
GROUPS, enter Web Tools for Education and then press the FIND IT button.

* Global Project Based Learning - NCLB
5:00-6:00pm PDT
Global Project-based learning refers to connecting teachers and students
to collaboratively work together on curriculum based real-world
projects. New technologies, tools and resources are emerging in
interesting ways to facilitate a global learning community. Join Linda
Ullah in the ASO in an exploration of the challenges and triumphs
involved in getting schools, teachers and students to "study" together
globally. Before joining this discussion, please take a look at:
http://www.garlic.com/~lullah/gpbl/

* School Counselors - Great Counselor Websites
6:00-7:00pm PDT
Join Barbara Muller-Ackerman in the Caf=E9 as she shares some sites to
help you learn more about classroom management and dealing with the many
issues that face our youth.
----------------------------------------
Saturday, April 24
* Writing for Webheads
9:00-10:00am PDT

* Tapped In Tips and Tricks
4:00-5:00pm PDT
----------------------------------------
Sunday, April 25
* Webheads in Action
5:00-7:00am PDT

* Benkyoukai- Extensive reading and extensive listening: Two holes in
Japanese Language Teaching
1:00pm PDT
The only way to learn to do something well is to do it - not once but
thousands, even millions, of times. This is equally true whether one is
learning to play the piano, do crossword puzzles, or read and hear
Japanese. Given this truism, it's a shame that few students of Japanese
as a second or other language (JSOL) get much practice doing either. See
guest Brett Reynolds' paper at
(http://www.sabotenweb.com/bookmarks/about/43rdbenkyoukai.html
Benkyoukai will be held in the ASO.

Respectfully submitted,
