This week on NASAexplores we're featuring the articles, "Seeking The Key To
Lightning," on technology used today to study electrical storms and "The
Night Crew," on the staff that continues to monitor the Space Station at
nighttime. Below are abstracts of the articles, as well as brief
descriptions of the accompanying lessons for each grade level.

To access the articles and lessons, please visit the NASAexplores web site:

Lesson 1 - Don't Get Struck In The Wrong Place: To learn lightning safety
rules.

Lesson 2 - Lightning Strikes: To determine how far away lightning is using
division.

5-8
Lesson 1 - Lightning Web Quest: To research lightning on the Internet.

Lesson 2 - Lightning Statistics: To interpret and graph data on lightning
statistics.

9-12
Lesson 1 - Where Not To Fly...In The Florida Keys: To determine the areas
around the Florida Keys where the Altus plane could not fly.

Lesson 2 - Altus On The Climb: To determine and compare the actual climb
rate to the theoretical climb rate of the Altus plane.

Topic 2: The Night Crew

Ed van Cise sits at the desk of Space Station Mission Control at night. What
does he watch for? What's going on during the late shift?

K-4
Lesson 1 - Houston, Do You Have The Time? To calculate elapsed time.

Lesson 2 - Working Day And Night: To become aware of career choices and
requirements of jobs.

5-8
Lesson 1 - Let's Go Team! To work together as a team to complete two
team-building activities.

Lesson 2 - It's About Time: To create a sundial and use it to determine the
discrepancy between true solar time and the time we see on our clocks.

9-12
Lesson 1 - Shifts For Flight Controllers: To study, graph, and analyze data
relating to NASA's flight controllers.

Lesson 2 - Knowing The Job Before Taking The Job: To research and explore
