Subject: NASAexplores This Week
This week on NASAexplores we're featuring the articles, "The Sound of
Turbulence," on wake vortices and "A Place For Everything," on how NASA
keeps track of items on the ISS. Below are abstracts of the articles, as
well as brief descriptions of the accompanying lessons for each grade level.
To access the articles and lessons, please visit the NASAexplores web site:
Topic 1: The Sound of Turbulence
Using precise microphones and laser radar, scientists can record the
strength, position and location of airplane wake vortices. This could help
better manage airplane takeoff and landing times at airports.
K-4
Lesson 1 - Eddying Air: To learn how a vortex is created.
Lesson 2 - Who Can See The Wind? To learn that air is an invisible gas.
5-8
Lesson 1 - Liquid Air: To learn that air is a fluid and has properties
similar to a liquid.
Lesson 2 - Tornado In A Bottle: To visualize a tornado using a simple
experiment.
9-12
Lesson 1 - Wake Vortex: To understand current research on airplane wake
vortices and how technology based on this concept could help improve airline
efficiency.
Lesson 2 - Pourable Air: To learn that air is a fluid and has properties
similar to a liquid.
Topic 2: A Place For Everything
When astronauts make personal or special requests for items like CD players,
a favorite paperback book, a video game, or a favorite type of T-shirt, it's
the Cargo Integration, Inventory and Stowage Coordinator who makes it come
together.
K-4
Lesson 1 - Where Is It? To practice skills of observation.
Lesson 2 - Where Does It Go? To classify household objects.
5-8
Lesson 1 - Where Are My Socks? To utilize observation and memory skills to
play a concentration game.
Lesson 2 - Organizing And Graphing The Data: To use a spreadsheet to
organize and graph microgravity experiments.
9-12
Lesson 1 - Tracking The Data: To use a spreadsheet to organize microgravity
experiments.
Lesson 2 - Where Does It Go? To use an inventory activity to demonstrate
the difficulty of keeping track of all materials on the International Space
Station.
