Luminary Lectures @ Your Library present Dr. Joseph Janes 2/10/03
Dr. Joseph Janes will be presenting a lecture entitled, "Why Does Digital
Reference Matter?" at the Library of Congress on Monday, February 10, from
10:30am-12:00pm in Dining Room A on the 6th floor of the Library of
Congress' James Madison Building, located at First Street and Independence
Avenue S.E., Washington, D.C. Dr. Janes is the Founding Director of the
Internet Public Library, and an Assistant Professor at the Information
School of the University of Washington.
Seating at this event will be limited to 80, so please allow time to arrive
early. No reservations are necessary. All lectures are free and open to the
public. This lecture will be broadcasted a LIVE via our website, and the
recorded webcast will also be made available after the event, at:
http://www.loc.gov/rr/program/lectures/.
About the lecture: There's been a lot of talk over the last few years about
digital reference. It started slow, and then seemed to find an enthusiastic
audience, and now some skepticism is creeping in, or at least some serious
questions about its purpose, value, and sustainability. It's worth asking
the question, then, of why it seems to matter so much, if indeed it does,
and how to proceed from here.
More about Dr. Joseph Janes: Joseph Janes is Assistant Professor and Chair
of Library and Information Science at the Information School of the
University of Washington and Founding Director of the Internet Public
Library. A frequent speaker in the US and abroad, he is the co-author of
eight books on librarianship, technology, and their relationship, including
the forthcoming Introduction to Reference Work in the Digital Age and
writes the "Internet Librarian" column for American Libraries magazine. He
holds the M.L.S. and Ph.D. from Syracuse University, and has taught at the
University of Michigan, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,
the State University of New York at Albany as well as at Syracuse and
Washington.
