The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has chosen 19
teams to take part in a $1 million 200-mile, robotic-car race in the Mojave
desert. The race is scheduled for March 2004. The 19 teams already accepted
could be increased to 25, and include one team of California high
schoolers. Known as the DARPA Grand Challenge, the agency sought unique
solutions to robotic transportation by opening this contest to any group
willing to go through the application process, as opposed to only the
traditional defense contracting companies. DARPA expected to receive only
about 30 applications, however, it was overwhelmed with 106 teams
submitting applications.
