Here is the hit on genealogy research...including the post from today. Thanks
for your help!

1. If this doesn't work, I promise not to try again! I'm at school this
time, so I hope that will work.

The USGenWeb project is a great resource for budget genealogy. You can
find them at http://www.usgenweb.org/ Since most of the material is
contributed and transcribed, it would make a great conversation starter
for talking about transcription, attribution, etc. You can find the
most amazing gems of info there sometimes! Also, the Immigrant Ships
Transcriber's Guild does a fantastic job as well. Again -
transcription, but a good beginning reference point. Find them at
http://www.immigrantships.net <http://www.immigrantships.net/>

It also occurred to me that the local public library, library consortium
or state library system may offer access to some of the subscription
databases, such as Ancestry or HeritageQuest. One of the consortia
members near me offers at home access to Heritage Quest and I love it.

2. http://www.familysearch.org
is totally free, and has the information that has been submitted to the
Family History department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
in Salt Lake City.

http://rootsweb.com is a huge collection of stuff, might take them a while to
find
anything. Ancestry.com is not free, but...

If they want to drive to Topeka, there is a Family History Library (ph:
785-271-6818) 2401 SW Kingsrow Rd. which may have access to Ancestry.com
which would have the various US census records online.

The master site for genealogy research is Cyndi's list at
http://www.cyndislist.com/
It lists ALL genealogy sites (well, it takes a few weeks for a brand new site
to
make cyndi's list) The sites are listed by topic and geographical area as well

as alphabetically and divided into free and subscription sites. MOST genealogy

information is free. (I haven't looked at Cyndi's list for a few months but
one
of the topics used to be "Brick walls" and how to get past them.)

Something I did not mention is that email is one of the best methods of
locating additional information from someone who is also researching the same
family that you are.
The teacher (or you) will need to spend some time getting used to the search
system at Rootsweb in the message boards, but if your kids have email
privileges, they can begin here..........
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/script/main/rw
The kids should also use Google and perhaps
www.alltheweb.com
When using Google, they must use quote marks around the names and they should
try the names reversed, as follows..........
"gordon walter"
"walter gordon"
and if they know that grandpa lived in a specific town, they should try adding
additional names or dates to whittle down the number of hits they will get.
EXAMPLES.............
"gordon walter" ackley
"gordon walter" ackley nancy
"gordon walter" ackley nancy iowa
"gordon walter" ackley nancy iowa 1935
etc.

5. The best online resource for genealogy research is most certainly
http://www.cyndislist.com. Through it you can find many resources that are
free. Another good source is http://www.ancestry.com , however, much of their

collection is restricted to members. You might contact ancestry.com and see if

they could arrange a 30 day trial or some other free usage period for students
to use.
