The California Science Project administered by the Office of the
President of the University of California recently announced the
publication of "Essential Elements of Effective Science Instruction for
English Learners." The California Science Project is a university-based
professional development network for pre-K-16 teachers of science. This
publication addresses the many challenges faced by English Learners and
their science teachers as they develop the academic language of science
along with standards-based understandings. Chapters deal with classroom
talk, textbooks, assessment, vocabulary development and professional
resources. Written by Dr.Fred Dobb, California Science Project English
Learner Specialist, this new document reflects the activities of the
twenty regional sites of the Project.
