Schools, Lenders Asked to Assist Active Duty Military Personnel

   ED reminds student loan lenders & guaranty agencies that
   active duty military personnel are not required to make
   student loan payments while deployed.  Colleges, universities,
   & other postsecondary institutions are encouraged to assist
   students & student loan borrowers who have been mobilized in
   recent military deployments.

NCLB Summer Reading Achievers

   Secretary Paige joined Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue, Atlanta
   Public Schools Superintendent Beverly Hall, students,

   Summer Reading Achievers program.

Reading First Grant for Louisiana

   Louisiana will receive more than $19.2 million for the first
   year of a multiyear Reading First grant to help schools &
   districts improve children's reading achievement using
   scientifically proven methods of instruction.

Video Study of Math Teaching in 7 Countries

   A video study of 8th-grade math teaching across 7 countries
   reveals that, while there is no single method used among the
   high-achieving countries, how math is taught in the U.S.
   differs in striking ways from how it is taught in high-performing
countries.

Highly Qualified Teachers the Focus of April TV Show

   "Investing in America's Classrooms: Ensuring Every Child Has a
   Highly Qualified Teacher" is the title of the next ED TV show,
   which will be broadcast & webcast April 15, 8-9 PM ET.

Mississippi Accountability Plan Approved

   Secretary Paige announced that Mississippi successfully
   crafted an accountability system aligned with the No Child
   Left Behind Act.

Guidance on Standards & Assessments

   This non-regulatory draft guidance is designed to help states,
   districts, & schools understand & implement NCLB requirements
   related to standards & assessments.

Title I: Regulations & Presentations

   Secretary Paige proposes to amend Title I regulations to
   clarify statutory provisions regarding state, local education
   agency, & school accountability for the academic achievement
   of students with the most significant cognitive disabilities.
   The proposed regulations are needed to implement changes to
   Title I of the Elementary & Secondary Education Act made by
   the No Child Left Behind Act.  Comments must be received on or
   before May 19, 2003.

   Conference in February -- on accountability & adequate yearly
