I don't know if this would be of interest to the list readers, but I
think eliminating classes in social studies is a travesty for the
students. Here are some quotes from the article in a recent issue of the
Pensacola News Journal, Pensacola, FL:

"Social studies teachers say students need more - not fewer - classes in
civics, history and geography.
That's why a group of Escambia County teachers plans to fight a
recommendation by the Florida Department of Education to cut back on
social studies classes in the years to come."
. . .
"Already, teachers say, they're shocked by what their students don't know
about the world around them and its history."
. . .
"Teachers say the recommendation to deemphasize social studies is fallout
from the statewide effort to excel on the Florida Comprehensive
Assessment Test.
The FCAT, which covers math, reading, writing and science, is used to
rank public schools on an A-to-F statewide report card.
High-performing schools are eligible for bonus money, while chronically
failing schools are subject to state sanctions, such as private-school
vouchers and state takeovers. The test scores also are used to make sure
schools meet federal criteria."
