Continuing coverage of the anniversary of the alpha
helix discovery, for senior secondary biology teachers.
This nugget discusses recent milestone documents.

Nuggets reported on the Watson and Crick DNA paper
(Nature, April 25 1953) a little while ago. That's the
short, relatively readable paper which first reported
the double helix structure of DNA.

For DNA's recent history, links 1A and B above take
you to the first papers announcing the sequencing of
the human genome -- by Craig Venter et al (Science,
February 16 2001) and the International Human Genome
Sequencing Consortium (Nature, Febuary 15 2001). The
publishers of both prestigious journals have kindly
placed these historic papers on the Web.

Now don't assign 1A and 1B to your students! You know
you're in for a rough ride when each paper lists over
200 authors and runs to sixty fine-print pages.  DNA
research has advanced since the Watson and Crick days,
hasn't it?

More accessible, fortunately, is a two-page retrospective
(link #2) of the genome project which James Watson himself
published a few months later. Watson directed the team in
link 1B for awhile, so he too has advanced since the early
days with Crick. In 2200 words with a Grade 12 reading
level, he relates the race between his and Venter's teams
to map the genome. Watson also hearkens back to his 1953
discovery of the DNA helix, and relates how much the new
genome map means for him.

The Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, of which Dr. Watson
is now president, is the publisher for link #2. The three
papers carry little advertising.  Please respect the
copyrights, which permit limited copying for educational use.

[  PS: one way to move long URLs like 1A and 1B
[  from an email to your browser, if the email
[  has broken it in the middle:
[  copy the whole URL to your browser and then
[  delete the carriage return character in the
[  browser address bar. You'll see both lines
[  of type merge, and then the URL should work.
