Friends,
We have a rare opportunity to influence the future of New York City
Public Schools.
As you know, the Campaign for Fiscal Equity (CFE) has won a tremendous
victory in the courts. Last November, a court-appointed panel
recommended that the City receive an additional $5.6 billion in school
funding over the next four years. Now, the City Council has taken up
the task of determining how that money should be spent. From February
1 to February 15, the Council will hold hearings to get input from the
public on how and where to spend these vital resources.
Here's the unique part: the hearings will be conducted online, and
anyone associated with the New York City school system can
participate. In fact, I urge you to participate. This is our one-time
opportunity to provide New York City children with an equal
opportunity for a quality education. The online hearings will focus on
six areas in which the additional funding will make a significant
impact: (i) class and school size, (ii) teacher retention, recruitment
and quality, (iii) after-school programs, (iv) pre-K programs, (v)
facilities and technology and (vi) school accountability.
These online hearings follow a series of traditional public hearings
that concluded recently. What can you do to help? It's simple, it
won't take much time and you will influence how the CFE money should
be spent to improve NYC schools:
1. Go to http://208.185.150.34 or www.YourVoiceYourSchools.org and
follow the easy steps to sign up and participate.
2. Participate in a hearing. When you do, you will make a difference
for the children of the City.
3. Forward this email to anyone who cares about our public schools.
The City Council is reaching out to all concerned New Yorkers in an
unprecedented way. Never before have our citizens had such a direct
and easy method for shaping the way our children are educated. Take
advantage of this unique opportunity, and lend your voice to your
schools.
