New GEM Documentation Released:
----------------------
On November 30, 2004, the GEM Consortium released new documentation for
the GEM 2.0 Elements and the Gateway Application Profiles.  The new
documentation has an individual page for each GEM element and element
refinement.  The pages include descriptions, best practice information,
examples of XML and RDF representations of the element, and crosswalks
with IEEE LOM and MARC.


The application profiles define which elements are to be used for metadata
records included in the Gateway.  The GEM 2.0 application profiles use
elements from both the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative and GEM.  The GEM
Consortium defines three application profiles for metadata to be included
in the Gateway:


1.  Gateway Lite: the minimum level of cataloging required for a metadata
description to be included in the Gateway.


2.  Gateway Full: includes all of the properties included in the Lite
profile and adds properties that are useful for richer resource
descriptions.


3.  GEM: the fullest of the profiles; used as the measure of a GEM
compliant application.
