GEM Governance Board: Call for Nominations
December 2, 2004

This is a call for nominations for three GEM Governance Board
representatives. The deadline for nominations is May 30. For more
information, contact Nancy Morgan, GEM Assistant Director,
nmorgan@xxxxxxxxxxx


What is the GEM Governance Board?
=================================

The GEM Governance Board is charged with the responsibility of approving
and overseeing GEM policies and procedures.  It includes the following
representation from the GEM operational groups:

- 4 representatives from the Users Group (members who are users of
The Gateway & GEM),
- 4 representatives from the Collection Holders, (members with
records in The Gateway) and
- 2 representatives of the GEM Administrative Group (GEM staff at
Syracuse University).



What are the expectations of a Governance Board representative?
===============================================================

Eligible members should be able to fulfill the following commitments:

- create and oversee policies and procedures for the GEM Project and
The Gateway
- make decisions pertaining to membership of GEM Collection Holders,
- plan for the continuation of the GEM Project
- meet at least twice a year.  Meetings are held by teleconference,
with one or two face-to-face meetings per year.



Who is eligible to serve?
=========================

Nominations are open to all Consortium member organizations



How many openings are there?
============================

There are currently the following openings for a three-year term of
office:
- 3 representatives from the Users Group,
- 2 representatives from the Collection Holders



What is the timeline?
=====================

The deadline for nominations is December 9, 2004. The sitting Governance
Board will appoint new members by vote soon after.



Who should I contact?
=====================

If you would like to be considered as a nominee, please provide a brief
biography, a statement as to your interest in GEM, and why you would
like to serve on the Board.
