Folklife in Education Award Programs -- Call for entries

The AFS Folklore and Education Section is pleased to announce the Dorothy
Howard Folklore and Education Prize. The $100 prize will be awarded to the
individual(s) or organization whose work most effectively encourages K-12
educators or students to use or study folklore and folkloristic approaches
in all school environments.  Such work includes, but is not limited to:
curriculum materials, publications, exhibits, World Wide Web sites, videos,
audio recordings, cd-roms, or articles. Work produced in the two calendar
years prior to the annual AFS meeting will be eligible for consideration.
Nominations should identify the author(s) or creators(s) publisher, date of
publication, and describe why the nomination deserves consideration.
Statements should not exceed three double-spaced pages. Anyone may nominate
work by submitting three copies of materials, or in the case of unpublished
work, three copies of detailed descriptions and any relevant supporting
materials to the Chair of the Prize Committee. Deadline fo

The Folklore and Education Section of the American Folklore Society also is
sponsoring the Robinson-Roeder-Ward Fellowship in memory of folklorists
Beverly Robinson, Bea Roeder and Vaughn Ward, whose vision, scholarship and
activism inspired a generation of Folklorists working in K-12 education.

The Robinson-Roeder-Ward Fellowship will be awarded to an educator who is
engaged in folklore, ethnography, or cultural heritage and K-12 education.
The fellowship will provide the recipient a stipend of $300 to participate
in the annual meeting of the American Folklore Society and free membership
in the Folklore and Education Section for one year.

Applications need to be postmarked by March 1, 2005. Award announcement will
be made by March 29, 2005.  The recipient will receive the stipend by August
1, 2005.

The recipient of this award agrees to attend the annual meeting of the
American Folklore Society in 2004 to be held in Salt Lake City, Utah,
participate in one or more sessions as a presenter or discussant and submit
follow-up suggestions such as ideas for class implementation, reflections on
the meeting, or future plans for using folklore. Section members will assist
the recipient in planning and submitting a proposal to the American Folklife
Society and be available at the AFS meeting.
