3) Warning - Windows Genuine Advantage attempts to verify whether your copy of Windows is pirated or not. Not all copies of XP are alike, and your computer might fail the "Windows Genuine Advantage" test if WGA can't find the license key. If you download Windows Media Player 11 it will automatically launch the Windows Genuine Advantage. If you install WMP 11 and for some reason you fail your WGA check, your media functions will be crippled. No NetHappening Reader should be forced to learn the difference between OEM and generic OS versions and have something like this happen to them. Other folks found WMP11 unable to play various valid video streams that WMP10 handled. It was possible to do a fresh install of the standalone WMP10 package that then worked + you can find it via: http://tinyurl.com/9rz5l (choose "Player 10 for Windows XP" from the "Select Version" option) ABOUT LINUX http://www.edu-cyberpg.com/Technology/Linux.html COPYLEFT AND THE CREATIVE COMMONS http://www.edu-cyberpg.com/Internet/copyleft.html OPEN SOURCE http://www.edu-cyberpg.com/Technology/VIVE.html Richard Stallman was talking up his "copyleft" idea, which he called "a mirror image" of copyright. Microsoft will drive Linux desktop adoption in 2007 http://tinyurl.com/y4mvqg As part of a list of predictions for 2007, research firm IDC said Microsoft's client operating system anti-piracy efforts will backfire in 2007. Instead of stamping out software piracy, the campaign will drive customers toward a Linux desktop, said the Framingham, Mass.-based research firm. The anti-piracy program, called Genuine Microsoft Software, weeds out users with unlicensed versions of Windows. When users log into the Microsoft Web page, they are prompted for an OEM license number to validate their version of Windows. If the number is accepted, users obtain access to additional Microsoft services and products, many of which are free. 4) Small firms advised to hunt out hackers help http://www.itp.net/news/details.php?id=23232 SMB owners and managers should hire so-called ethical hackers, http://www.edu-cyberpg.com/Technology/ethics.html either as part of their in-house IT teams or on a freelance basis in order to safeguard their data, according to Sanjay Bavisi, president of the International Council of E-Commerce Consultants (EC Council). 5) YIKES! The National Defense University, located in Washington, D.C., is currently without Internet or e-mail while undergoing unspecified maintenance activities. NDU is no longer connected to DOD networks and staff and students will be without service for two to four weeks, according to Dave Thomas, NDUs director of public affairs. Thomas declined to comment on the reasons for the maintenance and could not confirm or deny whether there had been a recent network intrusion at NDU. He is being charged with two counts of computer fraud. If convicted, he could face 20 years in prison and a fine of $500,000 -- $250,000 for each charge.A former systems administrator for Medco Health Solutions was arrested Tuesday and charged with trying to take down a computer network that maintained customer health care information. Giftedness is a trait that starts at birth and continues throughout the life-span. Giftedness is not a marker of success, but rather of aptitude or the inherent ability to learn. This ability is tempered by the fact that experts, including Linda Kreger Silverman and Dr. Fernidad Eide, have estimated that between 20-40% of gifted individuals have a learning disability, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder or some other neurological disorder. Giftedness may have a genetic component; research has shown that first-degree relatives of the intellectually gifted will often have IQs measuring within 10-15 points of each other. Gifted children often develop asynchronously; their minds are often ahead of their physical growth, and specific cognitive and emotional functions are often at different stages of development. They may move more quickly through stages established by post-Freudian developmentalists such as Jean Piaget.^[citation needed] Gifted individuals also experience the world differently, resulting in unique social and emotional issues. The work of Kazimierz Dabrowski suggests that gifted children have greater psychomotor, sensual, imaginative, intellectual, and emotional "overexcitabilities". <>~~~~~<>~~~~~<>~~~~~<>~~~~~<>~~~~~<>~~~~~<>~~~~~<>~~~~~<>~~~~~<> Educational CyberPlayGround NetHappenings Mailing List ©1993NetHappenings: the largest and oldest K12 Education Mailing List Email Preferences -- Subscribe - Unsubscribe - Digest
