Banking on Security
http://www.darkreading.com/document.asp?doc_id=111503&WT.svl=column1_1
We were recently hired by a regional bank to assess its security. When
negotiating the services agreement with the bank president we agreed to
perform the standard network security penetration testing, but he
insisted we also test the security awareness of the bank staff.
What he really wanted to discover was whether employees have become
complacent in verifying credentials of the customers, but more
importantly checking out the people who service the bank's needs. The
bank had recently outsourced its IT functions, and although they were
promised a dedicated technician by the outsourcing firm, the revolving
door of technicians coming and going had become the standard.

PDFs open critical hole in Internet Explorer
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/12/01/adobe_vuln/
A critical vulnerability has been identified in Adobe's Acrobat and
Reader software which affects Internet Explorer users.
As well as causing crashes, the frailty could allow a botnet to take
control of the whole computer when a PDF is opened within Explorer.
The hole is present in Acrobat Standard and Professional versions 7.0.0
to 7.0.8, and Adobe Reader 7.0.0 to 7.0.8. Only Microsoft's browser is
vulnerable.
Adobe's programmers are working on a patch, which should be available on
its support site soon. In the meantime, deleting AcroPDF.dll from the
will prevent Explorer from opening PDFs in the browser window.
Adobe's advisory is here [1].

China a major cyberthreat, commission warns
http://www.fcw.com/article96975-12-01-06-Web
China is fielding information warfare units and developing
anti-satellite capabilities aimed at countering U.S. military
technology, according to a U.S. congressional commission.
China's cyberwarfare strategy has switched from a defensive to an
offensive posture, with the goal of attacking enemy networks and denying
adversaries access to information, said the U.S.-China Economic and
Security Review Commission (USCC) [1] in its annual report, released
Nov. 16. Chinese strategy focuses on U.S. systems that perform command
and control or deliver precision weapons, the report states.

http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=36134
USERS HOPING for pirated copies of Vole's latest operating system Vista
might find themselves downloading some heavy duty malware.
In an interview with APC Magazine, a Volish technology specialist John
Pritchard said that the installation process and the ease with which
administrators can pre-install software into a Vista install DVD could
be to blame.
Pritchard said that pirated copies of Vista could easily come with
malware preinstalled.

have assigned millions of international travelers, including
Americans, computer-generated scores rating the risk they pose of

"The travelers are not allowed to see or directly challenge these
risk assessments, which the government intends to keep on file for 40

possibility that faulty risk assessments could cost innocent people
