The National Science Teachers Association has
TURNED DOWN an offer of 50,000 free copies of "An Inconvenient Truth",
purportedly because it may compromise their ability to raise money from
ExxonMobil, which supports the NSTA with money and produces a lot of
"educational" materials that the NSTA *does* distribute (or allows to be
distributed at its annual convention, which isn't exactly the same
thing). Get 'em early, and they'll stick with you for life. I hope
that, rather than just using this to generate political outrage, Gore
and the producers of the film will simply bypass NSTA and find a way to
get copies to each science teacher. ~ Rod Van Meter

Is student data safe?
http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,650210566,00.html
Utah's universities are working to protect students' personal
information, but some schools need to get their policies up to date to
block hackers and comply with federal law, according to a report
obtained by the Deseret Morning News.
The first comprehensive information technology audit for the state
system of nine public colleges and universities reveals a need for more
formalized security policies to protect private information ranging from
Social Security numbers to health data.

Justine Cassell: Disempowering Girls as Users of Technology.
Girls' use of technology threatens the established social order.
That's the real reason behind the fear of girls using social networking sites.

Throughout US history, each time women have become the most frequent users

of a popular and brand new communication technology, narratives emerge
in the mass media and eventually in the popular psyche about the
dangers awaiting women who use technology alone.

Microsoft Corp. has released Vista
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061130/ap_on_hi_te/microsoft_vista
Vista Takes Security Up a Notch
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,2063967,00.asp
Review: But new features will have greater impact on consumers than
corporations.
One of the advertised hallmarks of Windows Vista is security as in
Microsoft's renewed focus on and dedication to tightening up the Windows
operating system.
Indeed, Vista is chock-full of new security features including a
beefed-up firewall, integrated anti-spyware functionality, BitLocker
drive encryption and UAC (User Account Control) but these features will
ultimately have greater benefits for consumers. For corporate customers
demanding cross-platform functionality, centralized manageability and
rock-solid reliability, these new features will likely be nothing more
than window dressing.

--> Attention:  Vista EULA
So if Microsoft thinks maybe you violated your license it can shut
down your machines. And they have extremely limited liability.
http://www.securityfocus.com/columnists/423/3
Now if Microsoft breaches the contract it wrote, the Vista EULA, what
are your rights? Well, according to the terms of the agreement you
agreed to, "you can recover from Microsoft and its suppliers only
direct damages up to the amount you paid for the software. You cannot
recover any other damages, including consequential, lost profits,
special, indirect or incidental damages."
But the Microsoft Vista EULA, like many other software license
agreements, gives the owner of the software (remember that's
Microsoft because you didn't buy it, you just licensed it) the right
of self-help. They have the right to unilaterally decide that you
didn't keep up your end of the contract, for example you didn't
properly register the product, you weren't able to demonstrate that
it was genuine, and so on, and therefore they have the right to shut
you off or shut you down. So, what gives them the right? Apparently,
the very contract that they now claim you violated.

SANS Top 20 Report - Deja Vu
http://osvdb.org/blog/?p=148
"I previously blogged about the SANS Top 20 List in a pretty negative
fashion. The list started off as the "Top 10 Vulnerabilities" and
quickly expanded into the Top 20 Vulnerabilities. Even last year (2005),
they were still calling it a "Top 20 Vulnerabilities" list when it
clearly had become anything but that. This year, SANS finally wised up
calling the list "SANS Top-20 Internet Security Attack Targets". Yes,
they are now listing the 20 most attacked "targets", not "exploited
vulnerabilities".

At some point during this message Goodman would punch in the code
programmed as the security number in most mobile phones- 4444, or any
similar repetition of a digit - and gain instant access to messages in
the personal mailbox.
Because most people forget to change the security code in place when
they buy the phone, the method worked beautifully for Goodman.
