French concessions on DRM not enough for Apple
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/05/12/french_drm_concessions/
The French Senate has passed a bill that would require digital
music vendors to use interoperable DRM (digital rights
management), but with relaxed provisions designed to make the
music industry more comfortable with the law. Instead of forcing
DRM systems open, the law would establish a government agency to
consider applications to license any particular DRM scheme on a
case by case basis; any group wishing to license Apple's FairPlay
DRM would apply to this agency rather than Apple. The Business
Software Alliance says the bill would still cripple the online
music industry. The bill now goes before a legislative committee
to have its language finalized.
