Partners in Hispanic Education Host Feria de Educacion

      ED & the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for
      Hispanic Americans, & other members of Partners in Hispanic
      Education kicked off a nationwide effort to help Hispanic
      American families become stronger advocates for their
      children's education.  They released "Ten Key Benefits for
      Parents of English Language Learners," a summary of the most
      important provisions in the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB)
      affecting the nation's approximately 5 million English
      language learners.

Improvement in Math, Narrowing of Achievement Gap

      Participating in the release of data on 4th & 8th graders'
      performance in math & reading (from the Nation's Report Card),
      Secretary Paige said that there is good news & he is

Students Spending Longer in Remedial Education Courses

      Forty-two percent of entering freshmen at public 2-year
      colleges & about 1 out of 5 (20 percent) entering freshmen at
      1-year public institutions enrolled in at least 1 remedial
      course in fall 2000, according to a new report.

Grant to Improve Rural Education

      The Center for Policy Studies in Rural Education will receive

Taxpayers Stand to Save Under New Contract

      Taxpayers stand to save more than $1 billion, & more than 9
      million student loan borrowers will benefit from more modern,
      streamlined services under a new contract awarded to ACS

Technology & Student Achievement

      Nine states will share $15 million in grants to conduct
      scientific evaluations of how technology affects K-12 student

New Distance Ed Project Participants Add Diversity, New Academic &
Training Areas

      Five additional postsecondary education institutions will
      participate in the Distance Education Demonstration program,
      bringing the total number of institutions, systems, &
      consortia of institutions admitted to the program to 29 (in 23

TV Show, Webcast: Closing America's Achievement Gap

      ED's monthly TV show will focus in January on closing
      America's achievement gap & will commemorate the second
      anniversary of No Child Left Behind.  It will air on January
      20 from 8:00 - 9:00 pm ET on cable outlets & on the web.

U.S., Ireland Join Forces on Special Education Issues

      As part of their ongoing collaboration on education issues,
      Secretary Paige & Irish Minister of Education Noel Dempsey
      expanded their partnership by signing an agreement on issues

New Faces & Departures

      Secretary Paige announced that 8 individuals have been
      appointed to 4-year terms on the National Assessment Governing
      Board, the independent board that creates policies for the
