Ottawa =AD The federal government paid six private companies a total of over=
=20
half-a-million dollars to help design a logo for its national unity office,=
=20
evidence at a public inquiry shows.

The money was part of $17-million earmarked for unity initiatives in=20
1996-97 from a special reserve fund that required the approval of former=20
prime minister Jean Chr=E9tien for disbursements.

But there was no explanation, in testimony Monday before Justice John Mr.=20
Gomery, of why it took so many people and so much money to come up with a=20
logo for the Canadian Information Office.
