Google News Archive is Now a Mere Ghost of Its Former Self

Google continues to lose many points as the self proclaimed repository of
the world's knowledge. Google News Archive was an important repository of
news and newspaper coverage of world news over a broad range of time.
That resource is now entirely hidden in the Advanced Search of Google News
in the form of a date range search capability for which one must click the
bullet and then enter a date range such as 1/1/1900 on the left and
12/31/1920 on the right to get the twenty years at the beginning of the
twentieth century. This replaces the News Archive link that was on the
left sidebar of Google News just yesterday that had replaced a direct link
to the Google News Archive just this week. It should be noted in times
long past that there was a left sidebar link to Google News Archive search
that appeared and disappeared on whim from the Google News searches, but
that ceased to be there a long time ago and Google provided no links that
I know of on other Google pages to the Google News Archive search tool
that existed as a Google Search tool until some time this week.

I am not sure what procedure Google will have or not have for searching or
not searching Google News Archive next week.

In attempting to go to the links for Google News Archive that I have on
all of my research guides, I found myself on the home page of Google News
instead. I then found a link to a search done in Google News Archive used
the link and found search results from Google News Archive were the result
of using the link. Further investigation uncovered that once a search at
this point in time is executed in Google News, the left sidebar lists
these options:

More

All news
Images
Blogs
Any time
Past hour
Past 24 hours
Past week

Custom range...
Sorted by relevance

Reset tools
Clicking on the link to Archives will produce a search of the Google News
Archive but not the timeline that appeared in the independent Google News
Archive as it was earlier this week and before. One can use the custom
range link to search from one year through another such as say 1900
through 1945.

This development continues a notable trend at Google of providing a
database du jour type of environment that also featured the loss of the
Google Uncle Sam search for government sources, the Google Apple, Google
Linux, and Googe Microsoft tools along with some other very useful search
tools. Thank goodness that Scirus and Proquest's Summon search from their
Serials Solutions division provide some viable alternatives to Google
Search tools.
