CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Encyclopedia now is available
worldwide - on the worldwide Web, that is.
The West Virginia Humanities Council on Monday officially kicked off the
online version of the 2,200-article encyclopedia that first was published
in 2006 and represented a nine-year effort that included more than 600
writers.
Just like the book form, the online version includes articles on state
people and places, culture, science and art and a 12,000-event timeline.
But thanks to online technology, it also includes videos and interactive
maps - and a little quiz where you can test your "WVIQ."

The website for the online version,

will be offered for free, with no ads on the site.
"We do hope it will continue to be a revenue producer for us," Sullivan
added. "We're going to offer opportunities for people to contribute. We'll
continue to sell the print books on the website. And we've got another
resource we will offer there, a film history, which we recently released
as a DVD. So we're hopeful that we'll find revenue streams."
