I have been increasingly concerned over the last few weeks about the anti-Muslim rhetoric that has been spreading across the country, from opposition to mosques in places like Tennessee and California to voices calling September 11 "Burn the Koran Day." It saddens me personally and worries me from a national security perspective because it fuels the terrorists' propaganda. Moreover, I don't believe it is a true reflection of America.

I have worked with a few other individuals to put together a statement reaffirming America's commitment to religious freedom and tolerance, which is pasted below.

<snip>

We affirm America's commitment to these principles.

We condemn bigotry and intolerance by any and all, especially those who murder others in the false name of their religion.

We condemn the act of burning the Koran, a sacred text for millions of Americans and others around the world, as we would condemn the burning of all sacred texts.

A Florida group's plan to burn copies of the Quran on Sept. 11 could hurt the international mission in Afghanistan and put allied troops at risk, the head of NATO said Tuesday.

"I strongly condemn that. I think it's a disrespectful action and in general I really urge people to respect other people's faith and behave respectfully. I think such actions are in strong contradiction with all the values we stand for and fight for," said NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen. "Of course, there is a risk that it may also have a negative impact on the security for our troops."

Rasmussen's comments came just one day after Afghanistan commander Gen. David Petraeus issued a statement criticizing the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, which plans to burn copies of Islam's holy book for 10 reasons they explain on their website.

"It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort in Afghanistan," Petraeus said.

Lt. Gen. William Caldwell, the head of the NATO training mission in Afghanistan, told CNN that the issue was already a hot topic of discussion among Afghans and said, "We very much feel that this can jeopardize the safety of our men and women that are serving over here in the country."

The Associated Press reported that hundreds of Muslims in Kabul have already rioted in protest of the planned Koran burning.

Dove World Outreach Centers Burn a Quran Day Creating Fear A plan to burn copies of the Muslim Holy Book Quran is stating to create fear both in the United States and in Muslim countries around the world.

The plan is hatched by a Christian fundamentalist group called Dove World Outreach Center and was founded by Terry Jones. The group is based in Gainsesville, Florida. The planned date of burning the Quran is on September 11, 2010, the 9th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

Terry Jones and the Dove World Outreach Center also encourages people to burn a Quran in memory, he says, of the fallen victims of 9/11 and to stand against the evil of Islam. He is also the author of a book entitled Islam is of the Devil.

The news of the plan to burn copies of the Quran had roused Muslims around the Monday. Last Monday, a crowd of around 500 gathered there to burn American flags and shout death to America.

In Afghanistan, General David Patraeus has stated the event could endanger American troops stationed there. Army General Jack Keane, an adviser to Petraeus, called the event outrageous and insulting to Muslims.
