Kidney patients have higher risk of
death with weekend admission

Patients with end-stage kidney disease
who were admitted to the hospital
on a weekend were 17% more likely
to die in the hospital than counterparts
admitted on weekdays, a study revealed.
Researchers said that more investigations
are needed to determine what accounts for
the "weekend effect."

CDC sees drop in cold medication-related
ED visits for toddlers

CDC researchers said the number of
children below age 2 who were taken to
the emergency department for adverse
reactions from cough and cold
medications decreased by more than
50% between the 14 months before and
the 14 months after the products were
pulled from the market. However,
researchers noted that two-thirds of
the ED visits before and after
withdrawal involved unsupervised
ingestion of the medications.

Researchers tie nighttime birth to
brain problems in babies

Babies born between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m.
were 22% more likely than those
born during the daytime to develop
brain problems, a study of about 2
million babies showed. Boys,
first-born babies, and those with mothers
older than 35 or who did not have
prenatal care also had a higher risk of
brain problems, researchers found.
