CINCINNATI -- When a University of Cincinnati football player suffers a concussion, the sports medicine staff takes no chances in determining when that player can safely return to the field.

.

UC, team doctor Jon Divine, orthopedic surgeon Angelo Colosimo and trainer Bob Mangine have a tool at their disposal that few other schools have to provide objective, measurable data to help them make what often can be a difficult call.

.

It's called Dynavision D2, and UC is one of seven schools in the country that have one. The others are Baylor, Texas A&M, Texas-Corpus Christi, Central Florida, Army and Air Force. UC is the first to use it for return-to-play decisions.

.

The device tracks, measures and improves reaction time, peripheral awareness, hand-eye coordination and other visual motor skills.

.

UC started using it last summer at training camp for its football players, all of whom were baseline-tested so that when an injury occurs, the sports medicine staff can compare the before and after scores to measure the cognitive and motor activity of the player's brain.

.

"The team physician gets a ton of information to make the return-to-play decision," said Dr. Joseph Clark, a professor of neurology at UC who assists with the athletics training staff to administer the D2 testing. "The D2 is extremely objective and a very precise, quantifiable number that goes into that calculation. It does visual field with visual motor and reflex time."
