Greetings from St. Pete/Tampa...

...or actually, Athens, GA, which is where I am while writing this.
When you're reading it, I will be in Washington, DC for my younger
son's college orientation at GWU. Empty nest time is closing in Way
Too Fast. At least some of you out there probably understand this.

Meanwhile, in our current Resource of the Week, DocuTicker's UK
contributing editor, Adrian Janes, takes a look at how a small Montana
newspaper is making use of creative content from the Associated Press.

Have a great week.

Resource of the Week - AP Interactives from Daily Inter Lake
By Adrian Janes, DocuTicker Contributing Editor

Direct link to this post online: <http://digbig.com/5bbwhs>

A regular question in the information world of recent years has been
how can traditional newspapers continue in today's electronic
environment. Certainly economic survival must be an issue when so much
content can nowadays be read for free (although the London Times'
recent introduction of a fee-based operation could be a sign of things
to come).

In terms of creative survival, however, I am optimistic, as a number
of newspapers have produced an imaginative blend of text and
electronic features. Britain's Guardian is renowned for this, but here
I want to focus on Montana's Daily Inter Lake and its AP Interactives
feature. This form of partnership with a venerable news agency in
itself suggests the fresh thinking going on in at least some
companies.

On the home page, click on the News tab. This will bring up a range of
news areas, among which are both AP Interactives and a categorised
selection of thumbshots from AP Photos (although it appears a
subscription is necessary in order to view these full-size without an
obtrusive banner.)

As well as the current interactive, there is an archive of other
recent stories which goes back about 3 weeks. This presents a mixture
of both American and world news topics. A typical example is
'Overtreated: Too much medical care is making many Americans sicker.'
This presents diagrams of male and female figures, the interactive
element being to click on an organ to view the related information -
e.g. the heart, to view details on the alleged over-prescription of
heartburn medication.

With topics that have more of an historical slant, context is provided
through clickable timelines. For instance, 'FBI's top terrorism cases
since Sept.11, 2001' and 'Attacks by North Korea against the South.'
The timeline in the latter goes back to events in 1967, which is
indicative of the fact that although the information in the
interactives is presented in an easily assimilable way, it is not
superficial. These are also well-illustrated; letting the mouse hover
over a picture will produce an informative caption.

Not all the topics treated are 'heavy'. There are also sports stories
- e.g., Pebble Beach golf links (an illustrated tour of the venue for
the 2010 US Open, with audio commentary from caddies), and an ongoing
series of recipes entitled 'Burgers of Summer.'

Whichever interactive is being read, it is always possible to scroll
down beneath it to the archive and select another topic. As noted,
approximately 3 weeks' worth are listed at any one time on the current
webpage. However it is possible to view older subjects by
experimenting with the number at the end of the URL. Thus, adding ?200
at the end elicits 'American health care: What the Obama legislation
will mean,' and ?201 yields a piece on computerized cars. It's a more
random approach, but it may well bring up further subjects of
interest, and certainly expands the range and usefulness of this site.
