Uproar as Breast Cancer Group Ends Partnership With Planned Parenthood By GARDINER HARRIS and PAM BELLUCK Published: February 1, 2012 New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/02/us/ uproar-as-komen-foundation-cuts-money-to-planned-parenthood.html . Now, that nearly ubiquitous icon has many women seeing red.
.When the nations largest breast cancer advocacy organization considered in October cutting off most of its financial support to the nations largest abortion provider, the breast cancer group was hoping for a quiet end to an increasingly controversial partnership.
.Instead, the organization, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation, is now engulfed in a controversy that threatens to undermine one of the most successful advocacy campaigns. The foundations decision to eliminate most of its grants to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screening caused a cascade of criticism from prominent womens groups, politicians and public health advocates and a similarly strong outpouring of support from conservative women and religious groups that oppose abortion.
.Now, leaders of both the Komen foundation and Planned Parenthood are accusing each other of bad faith and actions that undermine women. And two organizations dedicated to detecting and curing breast cancer have found themselves on opposite sides of the nations divisive debate over abortion.
.John D. Raffaelli, a Komen board member and Washington lobbyist, said Wednesday that the decision to cut off money to 17 of the 19 Planned Parenthood affiliates it had supported was made because of the fear that an investigation of Planned Parenthood by Representative Cliff Stearns, Republican of Florida, would damage Komens credibility with donors.
. .Opinion: Susan G. Komens move against Planned Parenthood is callous pro-life politics as usual
Planned Parenthood scrambling to make sure thousands dont lose basic services.

.The breast cancer charitys move leaves Planned Parenthood scrambling to make sure thousands of mostly low-income women who cant afford doctors dont lose those basic services.
.The official excuse from Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation headquarters is that Planned Parenthood is under congressional investigation a probe that is widely acknowledged to be a cynical political move.
.Whats really playing out here is hostility toward reproductive rights. Komen has been under pressure for years to cut ties with Planned Parenthood because it provides abortion services and its new vice president ran for governor of Georgia on a platform of de-funding the organization.
.But Planned Parenthood has long been more than just an abortion center. Its cancer screenings have saved lives more than 3 million women and men visited the nationwide group last year. The funding from Komen allowed for 170,000 breast exams and 6,400 mammogram referrals.
.It also provides more contraception services than any other organization in the country, preventing more abortions than any of the supposedly pro-life groups that oppose it. Planned Parenthood provides STD testing, education and basic health care to millions of Americans who couldn't otherwise afford it.
.Yet because they provide contraception and abortion, it is consistently under fire.
. . Planned Parenthood: Sen. Alex Padilla a Komen 'Pink Tie Guy' no more By Amina Khan Los Angeles Times For the Booster Shots blog February 1, 2012, 4:19 p.m. http://www.latimes.com/health/boostershots/la-heb-alex-padilla-pink- tie-komen-planned-parenthood-breast-cancer-20120201,0,777800.story . "The choice is clear to me. I choose the latter."
.Other local groups have also condemned the decision. "The L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center is calling on people everywhere to cease their participation in Susan G. Komen fundraising events and transfer their support to other worthy organizations that support survivors of breast cancer or are working for a cure, or to give directly to Planned Parenthood," center Chief Executive Lorri L. Jean said in a statement.
