A shorter URL for the above link: <http://tinyurl.com/2d8xpeu>Getting back into the game quickly following a concussion is a priority for athletes everywhere, from high school and college to the NFL, MLB and the NHL.
It also can be dangerous. An athlete who has suffered a concussion and has not fully recovered is at heightened risk if he or she takes another blow to the head. Just watching for symptoms has proved to be woefully inadequate. In professional sports, it has been found that players who suffer multiple concussions likely will be haunted by neurological deficits for life.
Mercy Sports Medicine has been certified through the ImPACT concussion-management program to perform baseline brain testing to better assess brain function following a concussion.
Its another tool to manage concussion better, said Chris Watson, head trainer at Malone University and a Mercy employee. Sometimes, a family doctor will tell an eighth-grade football player that when the headache is gone, he can return to the game. Often, that isnt enough.
Familiar to trainers and some medical personnel, second-impact syndrome is becoming a diagnosis better understood by athletes and their parents.
ImPACT helps doctors and trainers determine when it is safe for an injured athlete to return to the game. The baseline computerized test takes 20 to 25 minutes and establishes what an athletes normal brain function is, based on reaction time, cognitive recognition of colors, shapes and memory.
