DATABASE SEARCH TECHNIQUES :
SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY :
RESEARCH TECHNIQUES:
Electronic Resources for Bibliographic Research in the Field of Sport Psychology

http://sites.google.com/site/searchtoolsforscholars2008/

The articles cited above describe in great detail where resources and information of value to researchers in the field of sport psychology andrelated fields can be located. Very little attention, however, in my experience, within academic learning programs at the high school andcollege level in the present time frame since the advent of computerized information tools, is paid to teaching students and researchers how to find sources of information relevant to their research topics. I have had numerous students confirm that many teachers today assign a topic, tell the students to use scholarly articles, possibly point out how to find the databases supplied by their school for this research if this is a college class and that is the extent to which these students are introduced to current techniques for finding topic relevant research articles. Fortunately teaching problem solving methodologies in physics, chemistry, and calculus is not approached with this kind of hands off instruction. Unfortunately quality use of internet search tools and bibliographic databases is a far more complex group of skills than is often imagined by many professional and student users of these tools.

The most critical ingredient for using databases and for finding articles on a topic, much like other aspects of the research process, is thinking. The time spent analyzing and describing clearly and in detail the precise subject one is seeking information about saves large amounts of time in finding the sources needed to pursue the literature review portions of this research. This is far from obvious to many if not most students starting a research project or term paper. Once a student in the days of the print card catalog asked for books on marketing and geography. His actual assignment seemed in his mind to call for these books, so rather than asking for information about his topic, he asked how to find the books on these topics.

It turns out that the student was required to write a paper discussing the economic and demographic viability of starting and marketing a weekly newspaper in Joliet, Illinois. In those days one would have to scramble to find information to support this research, but, with the books requested, it would have been a long process indeed for finding any relevant information for this assignment within the pages of the requested books.

It is, therefore, critically important to put substantial thought into defining the research topic and one then can consider collaborating with a librarian or other mentor to find quality sources about the defined topic. The topic definition process includes finding as much related or synonymous terminology for each aspect of the stated topic. Failure to use all synonyms in the searching process will often greatly reduce ones search results. This reduction of results is particularly a problem with topics that are very focused and narrow such that in sum total few articles exist about such a narrow topic. If few articles exist on a topic, a term rich search may stem the loss of some of these rare andtherefore important articles.

Hence, in my experience, it is critical with topics that are very specific and about which relatively little research has been done to employ all good synonyms for each concept in a search topic. If one for example searches for teens and sports and participation, one will find results, but not necessarily the best ones and will certainly miss many sources on this topic. One can expand the terminology for teens with the use of these words: teen, teenager, teenagers, adolescence, adolescent, adolescents, juveniles and youths and perhaps high school students.

Similarly, one can add specific sports of relevance to the topic as well as the broad terms sport, sports, athletic and athletics. Finally the term participation can be expanded with the help of a Google Search: participation and synonyms, which finds "About 260,000 results". The first link is to Thesaurus.com and this source provides several possibilities for terms to be used in this search:

http://thesaurus.com/browse/participation

The results include these possibilities for this research:

participator, participate, involvement, teamwork, experiencing, involved

Some of these terms are better than others, but variant forms of a word and a really close synonym are important additions to the search strategy. Teamwork may be of use but is not nearly as important as the word involvement in the context of this search topic. An important distinction regarding the meaning of the word synonym in the context of database searching is that they are not words that mean the same thing in general, but rather words that have a contextually synonymous meaning in a search statement. For example, high school students is not a synonym to the word teenager, but in the context of this search topic it may be used as a synonym. Many synonyms found for participate in Thesaurus.com are simply ridiculous in the context of this search.

Now consider these results from Google Scholar.

teens and sports and participation
Results 1 - 10 of about 38,400

(teens OR adolescents OR teenagers OR youths OR juveniles OR adolescent) and (sports OR baseball OR football OR basketball) and(participation OR participating OR involvement)
Results 1 - 10 of about 337,000

The armchair critic may argue that nobody needs 38,000 sources, let alone 337,000 sources so why add terminology? The use of the word Teens is not scholarly speech for one thing and adolescent may find more quality research content as a search term.

But the real problem is a symptom that leads to another facet of this thinking process. The numbers show by themselves that the topic is way too broad to be suitable for a term paper or research process and needs to be narrowed.

Add just one term to this search strategy and we begin to have a more precise topic, a more focused approach and a much different search result.

(teens OR adolescents OR teenagers OR youths OR juveniles OR adolescent) and (sports OR baseball OR football OR basketball) and(participation OR participating OR involvement) and obesity

Results 1 - 10 of about 27,800

http://tinyurl.com/2cmuepj

Add three more terms to this search and while the numbers are still very large, one has a topic to begin working with and finding a ballpark within the general topic to work with.

(teens OR adolescents OR teenagers OR youths OR juveniles OR adolescent) and (sports OR baseball OR football OR basketball) and(participation OR participating OR involvement) and obesity and (longitudinal OR longterm OR "long term")

Further ways to narrow the search topic will be suggested by additional thought about the articles found and their content along with the development of a sense of where the researcher wants to go with this topic. One could look at ethnicity or a specific minority group or one could look at a specific gender, or the impact of computer use or television viewing and so forth. There comes a point at which the limits of term entry into a Google search can no longer be expanded to a greater number of terms. This is one reason to use bibliographic databases, if one has institutional access to these databases, as the ability to perform searches with a number of search steps eliminates this restriction to a specific number of search characters for a search, a limitation that is found in Google and Scirus searching. In bibliographic databases, one can also limit search steps to subject heading occurrences of terms or title occurrences of terms or both andhave more focused search results for each group of synonymous terms employed in a search. Databanks like OVID, EBSCO and CSA (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts) amongst others support searching with multiple steps and combining these steps in any combination desired. One can also limit search steps to title or subject heading occurrences of terms searched in any of these databanks as well. This will not only numerically reduce the results for more populated search statements but will also produce search results that are far more precisely in conformance to the topic being searched.

If we select terms for ethnicity and race to narrow these search results we come up with 19,600 results and this search strategy

The use of synonyms in a search result provides documents that utilize each of those synonymous terms that might not be in the search result that employed fewer terms for each major concept making up the search topic. While enriching the language used in the search enriches the resulting set of documents, providing enough facets to the search topic so that the topic is very precise and focused, often leads to documents that reflect this complexity of topic as seen in the examples of results found from the most recent search.

In using Google Scholar for such searches, there is an additional important benefit that makes on target results even more powerful. Google Scholar for many documents includes a link "Cited By" that leads one both to additional sources in the bibliographic references of the found article and more importantly to sources more recent than the found document, sources that cite that work in their bibliographic references or text.

Consider this citation found in the search immediately above.

The phrase Meet the Googles has been coined and widely used in many of my topical bibliographic posts to emphasize that there are a variety of Google search tools beyond web search and indeed beyond Google Scholar as well that are very useful to researchers. One such tool, Google Books, can produce results from this search by clicking "MORE" and then clicking "BOOKS" from the resulting drop down menu. For this topic over 500 books are found.

Since Google has digitized millions of books, the results of searches in Google Books can be extensive, but the fact that these searches are conducted in the entire text of these books means that books are found in search results because of content buried deep inside the covers of the book. Hence book titles can seem of little or low relevance to the search conducted, but on the cited page and pages found by searching key terms in the text of that one book, one can find very on target passages within books in search results. Hence these examples from the above search:

The ability of Google Books to search within the text of a book provides a powerful tool for pinpointing topically on target book content that cannot be discovered anywhere else. This Google Books search capability is further discussed in this article:

Librarians, Jelly Beans, and Google Book Search.

Dillard, David.
Online

<http://guides.temple.edu/aecontent.php?pid=4480&sid=57531>

Books digitized by Google Books may not have the full text online in Google or even a sometimes quite extensive limited preview. There are many books with only a snippet view or with no view at all. The "Find in a Library" link often provided with books in Google books takes the reader to Worldcat.

<http://www.worldcat.org>

This database provides books bibliographic information, as well as a listing from closest to farthest, the libraries holding the book and in many cases links to individual library online catalog records for the book searched. The user simply provides their United States zip code to the search parameters for this geographic location feature of the database to be activated.

While one must include their zip code in the search request to start with the closest libraries, if no close libraries are shown and a book seems like a title that libraries should own, go to Worldcat advanced search and search by book title or the book's ISBN number that are both in the initial search result found in the record from Google Books. Such a search will often find two or more records in the Worldcat system for the edition of the book sought and one of these records is very likely to include libraries much closer to home than say Denmark. Google frequently does not provide the most productive link to Worldcat.

There is a listing of Google search tools and services at this website that exists to list, in addition to services listed on the Google Options page, additional Google search tools that Google either hides or no longer lists at all in their resource lists like the Google Options page.

Google News Archive is one source to turn to if news reports and more popular sources need to be a part of a research project or report. Google News Archive also includes a hyperlinked time line that gives a sense of the reporting about an issue over time in terms of quantity as well as the quality or nature of that reporting.

While Google search results are generally limited to no more than 1000 sources for each search, clicking this time line for specific periods of time can greatly extend the number of viewable article links for any search that produces a large result as one only sees results from the period of time selected and sequentially one can examine sources found for any number of the available time periods down to a month at a time.

The advanced search option in other Google search tools does have a provision for limiting a search for a range of dates from one month andyear to another month and year. This will serve to increase the viewable results for any Google search that produces a large result. The relatively active time frames for this obesity topic in terms of a larger number of articles being found are:

1970-1974
1990-1994
1999 to present

Google News for a less complex and specific topic is also an important tool for quality current results. Searching the word obesity in the title of articles leads to 1478 article citations and links at the time this is written.

Google facilitates easy movement from one of its databases to another if one uses the search options at the top of the Google page, the options found in the "MORE" drop down menu and with the use of advanced search. The searches are automatically transferred by Google from one of these search options to another in seconds when using the MORE drop down menu to navigate between services or using the links at the top of the Google search page such as News, Video, Images and so forth.

Using the Images search option on this topic includes results that are far beyond photographs, and include important sources of charts, tables and graphs that not only share data pertinent to this topic but also facilitate viewing the full document from whence these charts, tables and graphs come.

Google Blogs is another excellent search engine for finding media coverage of a topic including content such as professional weblogs from news, newspaper, media, magazine and trade journal sources that adds to the less academic and research oriented sources found in Google News Archive.

One might wonder why one would need to use any other tools besides Google search tools with such an abundance and diversity of sources found through Google including the ability to delve into the heart of books for very specific content contained therein and the ability of find more recent publications citing a known article within Google Scholar search results.

Another internet search tool outside of the world of Google, Scirus, is an excellent example of a powerful search resource that returns very important sources to searches done using Scirus. Consider the obesity search in Scirus.

Commercial bibliographic databases provided by most if not all colleges and universities for use of their faculty, students, staff, administration and in some cases alumni are a critically important resource for better quality research and include databases from vendors such as EBSCOHost, OVID, ProQuest, CSA and more. There are a number of advantages and advances with the use of bibliographic databases for both simple and complex, brief and extensive research projects over the use of Google search tools.

Nevertheless this is not the kind of decision to use one and not the other, but rather one can and should use both sets of tools, "the Googles" and bibliographic databases for the best results and capabilities of both worlds as needed for a specific research project. Bibliographic databases, unlike the familiar Google interface, do present a learning curve, so some time is needed to read "HELP" contentand other instructional sources for the best use of these databases. Indeed there was a time when many libraries including Temple University provided search interfaces from EBSCO that were far less than capable. Libraries selected versions of the EBSCO with less capability so as not to confuse their users. Fortunately, this changed when EBSCO eliminated all but its best and most productive search interface for all to use.

DATABASE: SEARCHING TECHNIQUES:
EBSCO: Customer Service Past and Present and Learning Better Ways to Use
EBSCO
<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Net-Gold/message/11695>

Other search systems have undergone similar development and improvement over time.

OVID, CSA and EBSCO, amongst some other databanks, do have capabilities that for those who take the time to learn and use them can save the user much time by returning much more precise and relevant sources in the results of many searches.

First of all in using these databanks or database providers, one can do searches in a number of search steps and combine these steps together in any order or combination, which allows a far more flexible use of the searched terminology than can be achieved in search engine search tools where one is limited to one search statement that can only be so many characters in length.

One also does not need to use parenthesis as extensively as is required in a complex search statement done as one step only. For those not trained in Boolean algebra, such use of parenthesis is a formidable concept to understand.

In using the databanks cited above and other databanks as well, one is not just limited to phrase searching using the quotation marks, but one can utilize proximity searching. In EBSCO, proximity searching can use their w operator or their n operator. W finds word pairs in the same exact same order while the N operator allows them to flip on either side of each other. One way of illustrating this technique is with the phrase "literature review". Literature w0 review finds these words in that word order next to each other with the use of the letter w followed by the number zero. Unfortunately, quite a few people talk about "review of the literature" and in EBSCO this reversed statement with words in between literature and review can be found along with the phrase "literature review" with this search statement: literature n3 review*. The use of the asterisk is called truncation and allows one to find additional letters in a word up to the end of a word built off of that root. In this case it finds review and reviews to facilitate finding reviews of the literature or finding literature reviews along with the singular word review in each of these phrases. Truncation exists in Google but does not work properly in my experience using it.

Search steps in the cited databanks can be limited to only title occurrences of the words on that step, as well as being limited to subject occurrences of the words in that step.

Results from a database search can be emailed or downloaded so as to facilitate work with accurately cited and usually abstracted sources so that search results can be worked with offline from the database without reproducing the entire search again to find these results.

One can use a number of EBSCO databases in an EBSCO search, and the same is true in OVID and in CSA, depending upon the databases from each vendor available at ones home institution.

One key to success in using these tools is a rudimentary understanding of Boolean Algebra also known as symbolic logic, an algebra for working with words mathematically with the Boolean operators "and" and "or" and "not".

While it is beyond the scope of this article to teach searching techniques in one or more of these databanks, showing the search steps that can be employed in this search about adolescent obesity and minorities with some expanded terminology will give a sense of how the EBSCO search interface works to ones advantage for such complex topics. EBSCO is the exclusive provider for SportDiscus, SportDiscus with Full Text, PsycArticles, and CINAHL (Combined Index for Nursing and Allied Health). For this topic, these databases available from EBSCO will be used.

In the first step we search for adolescents

S1 adolescen* or teen or teens or teenag* or youths or juveniles or (school w0 age) or (school w0 aged) or preteen* or preadolescen* (2589306)

The next two steps limit this content to occurrence in title and then in subject heading

S2 TI adolescen* or teen or teens or teenag* or youths or juveniles or (school w0 age) or (school w0 aged) or preteen* or preadolescen* (508119)

S3 SU adolescen* or teen or teens or teenag* or youths or juveniles or (school w0 age) or (school w0 aged) or preteen* or preadolescen* (2589306)

The next three steps search the selected terms for obesity and then limit these to title and then to subject heading.

S4 obese or obesity or overweight (432540)

S5 TI obese or obesity or overweight (161667)

S6 SU obese or obesity or overweight (373037)

The next three steps do the same for sports terminology

S7 sport or sports or baseball or football or soccer or hockey or basketball or tennis or running or (physical w0 exercis*) or (physical w0 workout*) or (physical w0 work) (2095025)

S8 TI sport or sports or baseball or football or soccer or hockey or basketball or tennis or running or (physical w0 exercis*) or (physical w0 workout*) or (physical w0 work) (453828)

S9 SU sport or sports or baseball or football or soccer or hockey or basketball or tennis or running or (physical w0 exercis*) or (physical w0 workout*) or (physical w0 work) (990952)

The next three steps do the same for the concept of participation

S10 participat* or involvement (2140225)

S11 TI participat* or involvement (264243)

S12 SU participat* or involvement (263491)

Next we search these three ways for selected terminology covering minorities, race and ethnicity

S13 race or racial or racially or ethnic or ethnicity or minority or minorities or (african w0 american*) or afro* or hispanic* or latino* or asian* (1920010)

S14 TI race or racial or racially or ethnic or ethnicity or minority or minorities or (african w0 american*) or afro* or hispanic* or latino* or asian* (478276)

S15 SU race or racial or racially or ethnic or ethnicity or minority or minorities or (african w0 american*) or afro* or hispanic* or latino* or asian* (744442)

Since this has been a topic heavily populated with publications, we can try combining each of these concepts only when used in subject heading or title with the use of Boolean Algebra within EBSCO searching rules.

Since this produces only six citations, we drop the participation steps from the search combination and try that result.

In addition to unique search features in Google Books and Google Scholar, there are databases or segments thereof that inhabit Google Scholar including PubMed or Medline, Science Direct, JSTOR and Muse to name four. All of these databases have sources of importance to the Sport Psychology. I posted this content on a medical discussion group regarding a problem that a poster was having with PubMed, the free online version of Medline, a database of journal literature in medicine and related fields produced by the United States government that has over 20 million citations.

"I cannot explain why PubMed presents a problem with this search, but when I encounter such a problem, I try to find an alternative tool that will provide the same or similar results. Please try these three links to see if those seeking to perform this search find satisfaction for their information needs with these results.

Now as regards our discussion of the completeness of Google Scholar in its
content of PUBMED sources, here is an interesting bit of circumstantial
evidence. EBSCOHost permits the use of quotation marks for a strict
phrase search and with this search in the MEDLINE database finds just
over half numerically of what Google Scholar and Google Government find
with a search of the same phrase and the term PUBMED in the Google
search. Scirus also finds substantially more than EBSCO Medline does.

S1 "do not resuscitate" Search modes - Boolean/Phrase View
Results (1148)

The same search with proximity operators and quotation marks around the
terms to mask boolean operators and stop words ("do" and "not") produces
the same exact result in EBSCO.

S2 "do" w0 "not" w0 "resuscitate" Search modes - Boolean/Phrase
View Results (1148)

One possiblility is that Google and Scirus are locating PUBMED and the
phrase "do not resuscitate", one or both, in citations listed in the
bibliographies of works found in this search, but this search result may
lead one to the observation that in at least some searches, use of
alternatives to PUBMED, namely Google Scholar, Google Government and
Scirus could lead to more on topic resources rather than less on topic
resources than a direct PUBMED search. It should also be kept in mind in
this context that Google searches do not in fact always come anywhere near
the numbers of citations found in search results displayed in Google
search results and also that Google search tools, as far as I know, never
show more than one thousand records in any search result. Record 1001 is
simply never reached, so there is something quite theoretical about these
numbers from Google, but those from Scirus may be quite another matter."

Also noted in a related message:

"If one will accept an end around kind of solution, this search may be a
useful alternative approach in Google and Google Scholar:

("allow natural death" OR "do not resuscitate") and pubmed

and also in Scirus
