I would like some ideas on how to get them interested in gardening. D. N., Rockford
.ANSWER: You dont have to wait until planting season. Begin now with indoor gardening projects. You could try a few small containers filled with potting soil and plant seeds of herbs such as basil, parsley or chives. Be sure the containers have adequate drainage holes and place them on a windowsill where they have exposure to the sun. It only takes a few days before they will sprout.
.For another fun project, try saving the seeds of oranges or grapefruit. Soak them overnight and then plant two or three in potting soil about an inch deep. An avocado plant can be started by letting the pit dry for 24 hours, remove the outer covering and place in a container filled with potting soil, pointed side up and about one third of the pit above soil. Keep the soil moist and you should see growth in four to six weeks. Once it starts to appear, cover the rest of the pit with soil.
.In anticipation of summer, make plans for their first outdoor garden with a few helping hands from you. There is a great guide at the urbanext.uiuc.edu under Urban Programs Resource Network. Go to the site, click on the icon Just for Kids. Then click on the title My First Garden. While it is designed for children, it has great ideas for anyone planning on gardening.
