. DISASTERS: No Response Heard at First Rescue Hole in West Virginia MineNo Response Heard at First Rescue Hole in West Virginia Mine April 7, 2010 7:19 a.m. EDT CNN US <http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/04/07/west.virginia.mine.disaster/?hpt=Sbin>
(CNN) -- A bore hole was drilled early Wednesday into the area of a West Virginia coal mine where four miners, unaccounted for following an explosion Monday, are expected to be found, Gov. Joe Manchin said.
Pipes were lowered into the hole, and officials banged on the pipes in an effort to contact those underground, but there was no response, Manchin said.
The hole punched through about 4:15 a.m. ET, the governor said. Two more holes were under way, and a fourth is planned.
"There's a sliver of hope, but we know that the odds are not in our favor," West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin told CNN.
"Everyone's going to cling to the hope of a miracle," he told reporters. "That is the true agony of this."
One drill bore down 1,100 feet to open a 6-inch hole in a ceiling of the mine, said Chris Adkins, CEO of Massey Energy Co., owner of the Upper Big Branch South Mine where Monday's fatal blast occurred.
There was a risk that the drill bit would ignite another explosion, he said. But rescuers injected water into the hole at the same time, lessening those odds, he said.
Another drill was located next to the first, he said."If one misses its mark, hopefully the other one will hit the mark," he said.
The process is made more uncertain because the drill can change direction when it enters a seam that has already been mined, he said.
<snip>Seven bodies have been removed from the mine. The seven were identified as Steven J. Harrah, 40; William R. Lynch, 59; Jason Atkins, 25; Benny Ray Willingham, 61; Carl Accord, 52; Deward Allan Scott, 58; and Robert E. Clark, 41, the Health and Human Resources Department said. Two other miners were taken to a hospital.
Eighteen more bodies have been identified, but they are still in the mine. Officials said they did not remove them because the rescuers were carrying a limited air supply and were focused instead on finding survivors.
