NATO warplanes destroyed dozens of Libyan government tanks around the
embattled cities of Ajdabiya and Misrata, as South African president Jacob
Zuma arrived in the capital of Tripoli for cease-fire talks.

Airstrikes blew up 11 tanks belonging to forces loyal to Libyan dictator
Muammar Qaddafi as they approached Ajdabiya today, and 14 more were hit
earlier on the outskirts of Misrata. NATO strikes also left craters in the
road used by Qaddafi to resupply troops shelling Ajdabiya, the North
Atlantic Treaty Organization said.

The situation in Ajdabiya, and Misrata in particular, is desperate for
those Libyans who are being brutally shelled by the regime, Lieutenant
General Charles Bouchard, the Canadian officer commanding NATO operations
over Libya, said in a statement. We are hitting the regime logistics
facilities as well as their heavy weapons because we know Qaddafi is
finding it hard to sustain his attacks on civilians.

NATO is enforcing United Nations resolutions that established a no-fly
zone over Libya and called on member states to use force to protect
civilians from attack by Qaddafis troops.

As fighting between Qaddafi loyalists and rebels seeking to end his
42-year rule enters its second month, Zuma arrived in Tripoli with a
delegation from the African Union to meet Qaddafi, in the first stage of a
two-day trip. He is expected to travel on to the rebel stronghold of
Benghazi, according a statement from the South African government.
Forced to Land

Yesterday, NATO planes forced a MiG-23 fighter aircraft flown by the
rebels to land within minutes of taking off from the Benina Airfield near
Benghazi. Under UN rules, no unauthorized aircraft is permitted to fly in
Libyan airspace, the NATO statement said.
