Various chunks of Lehman Brothers turbulent 164-year history have been
chronicled over the years in any number of well-known and substantive
books. Ken Aulettas Greed and Glory on Wall Street remains a classic, the
gripping narrative of the feud between the Lehman bankers and the traders
in the early 1980s that resulted in the unexpected sale of the bank to
American Express.
More recently, there have been three first-rate explorations of what led
to Lehmans ignominious end, nearly two years ago: Andrew Ross Sorkins Too
Big Too Fail, Vicky Wards The Devils Casino, and Lawrence McDonalds A
Colossal Failure of Common Sense. But it took Peter Chapman, an editor at
the Financial Times, to dare to tackle the whole ball of Lehman wax,
starting in 1844 and ending in 2008.
Given its scope and ambition, one would expect Chapmans The Last of the
Imperious Rich to be the size of the Manhattan phone book. But instead, it
is a surprisingly curt 274 pages. That means it moves along at a brisk
pace, covering lots of familiar and unfamiliar ground
