[neact] PLEASE read this--Thank you.

Dear Members of the NEACT listserve:
            It is one month to the day since my ³list serve etiquette² email
went out, pleading with each of you to THINK BEFORE YOU HIT THE ³REPLY²
BUTTON. Apparently many of you did not listen.
Several dozen members have now unsubscribed from the list [11 more today!],
mostly because of all the inappropriate replies to the whole list, which
should have gone to the individual sender of the original message. The rest
are because of some of you screaming at the entire list to unsubscribe you,
which is not how one unsubscribes.
            So let¹s try it again:
1) Any email sent to a list serve goes to every member of the list.
Ditto for any reply to any message. So if/when you hit ³Reply² to ANY
message that appears on the listserve, YOUR REPLY GOES TO EVERY MEMBER ON
THE LISTSERVE.
2) If you meant to reply to the individual, but just press ³Reply,² you
> a)     send your reply to ~ 300 people who do not need or want that email;
> b)    clutter the Inboxes of ~300 of your sister/fellow members;
> c)     are being disrespectful of your sister/fellow members;
> d) are sending what should possibly be private information out to ~300
> people;
> e)     are hurting NEACT;
> f) irritate or anger other NEACT members, driving them off the list.
In other words, PLEASE LOOK THREE TIMES AT THE ³To:?² line of any reply that
you are about to send in response to a post on the NEACT list serve. If it
says neact@xxxxxxxxxxxxx it is going to the entire list! Please THINK before
you press ³enter²!

1. If you intend to reply [solely] to the individual who posted the original
email, then you must delete the ³neact?² addressee line and insert the
address of the individual, either from your address book/contacts list, or
copied from the original email, or typed in manually.
2. A question: Have you ever said to your students ³READ THE DIRECTIONS!²?
Please try it:
> a) There should be a footer at the bottom of every message posted to the
> listserve that explains how to unsubscribe, etc.
> b) For several years, the NEACT website has had directions for using the
> listserve.  Go to www.neact.org <http://www.neact.org> , then to
> ³communications² on the sidebar at the left, thence to ³list service² to find
> an informational page about the list serve. There you will find easy-to-click
> links to accomplish what you want with respect to list serve membership.
> c) www.freelists.org/list/neact is another website with very full
> explanations, directions, and even Help files.
>
   3. A tip: If an incoming email subject line starts with ³[neact]² then
that is a listserve message?not a private message to you?and all the above
cautions apply.
   4. If you have questions or requests relative to your list membership,
you may send an email to the list moderator at sstepenuck@xxxxxxxxx .

    When we did this mass enrollment, I predicted some startup problems, and
asked for your patience. I did not expect them to be so extensive. THANK
YOU who are still with us for your patience, and please accept my apologies
for yet more clutter.

Respectfully yours, and in mourning for those we have lost,
Steve
