Calling all High School Chemistry Teachers
As a member of the Building a Presence for Science network, you are invited to participate in an NSF proposal: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2006/nsf06539/nsf06539.htm
What: The purpose is to fill the gaps in the knowledge and understanding of twenty-first-century chemistry among high school teachers in the State of Illinois via a long-term Institute for Chemistry Literacy and Computation (ICLC). The project will have as its primary component intensive summer instruction with a cohort of 120
participants who will return over the span of three years to reinforce and add to your understanding. The key feature of the curriculum will be a focus on computational chemistry and its role in molecular behavior, including medicinal chemistry, biomedicine, nanotechnology and drug development. In addition to enhanced chemistry understanding among the high school teachers, outcomes from the project will include a network of teacher-leaders who will continue to build upon their learning via ICLC conferences, seminar series given by industrial partners, and an active Website, and act as trainers in the future. Teachers will be paid $1,000/week stipend f!
or each 2-week summer institute for three years. They will need to make a commitment to participate all three years.
When: Summer 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010
Who: teachers who are teaching chemistry in rural or isolated
areas
teachers who have expertise in another area of science but are currently teaching chemistry
What next?
Please email Diana Dummitt at ddummitt@xxxxxxxx by April 21st for more information on this proposal and your possible participation.
Thanks!
Diana
