The 2017 Benjamin Peterson Award for Excellence in Teaching Secondary School
Chemistry
Presented by the Rhode Island Section of the American Chemical Society
Each year, the Rhode Island Section of the American Chemical
Society offers an award to a chemistry teacher at any public or private
school in Rhode Island in recognition of outstanding teaching at the
Secondary Level. Through dedication, innovation and leadership, this person
has inspired future chemists, provided leadership to colleagues, and
communicated chemistry to students and the public.
This annual award is named for a teacher who has been a leader
in chemistry education in Rhode Island. Ben Peterson passed away at the age
of 90 and was a living example of a true scholar. He mentored many of us
during his lifetime and left a considerable legacy of excellence in
chemistry education that continues.
The criteria for excellence include: the effectiveness with
which the teacher
facilitates the understanding of chemistry concepts, the use of innovative
techniques to help students, and his/her interaction with students, both
academic and extra-curricular. The selected teacher will be officially
honored at the May Annual Meeting held by RIACS. The presentation will
include a framed certificate and a cash prize.
A nomination form may be requested from Kathy Siok. The
application must include a letter of recommendation. A brief resume for the
nominee may be attached (or will be requested after the form is received).
Additional letters of recommendation or other materials may also be
submitted. Previous recipients of an RIACS award for Teaching Excellence
are not eligible. It is preferred that you return items by email.
All materials must be returned by April 1, 2015 to Kathleen
Siok.
