I shall take back my apology for sending the K chlorate (not
perchlorate) as someone called it, because I did that reaction so
many times I almost-- but did not-- tire of it! I was readying for a
cruise through the Panama Canal right after the New Year, and just
forwarded most items with a quick read only.
Cary is absolutely correct suggesting using Na chlorate: it melts
more smoothly and at a lower temperature, and I think it is less
costly. In fact, there is nothing to prevent you from melting the
chlorate with some sugar from a restaurant package gently mixed with
it. I never had an accident, no one ever got hurt; and in the old
days of "what do you mean by lab safety?" (only safety glasses) I
permitted students to determine if they had Na or K chlorate, using a
pinch of the chlorate whhich I placed iin the test tube.
Happy New Year.
Ken
