SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR SCIENCE INQUIRY MILTON ACADEMY
June 23-25 2008
<http://www.milton.edu/scienceinquiry/institute.html>http://www.milton.edu/scienceinquiry/institute.html
Inquiry-based science:
What is it? Why is it important?
How can I teach it?
Inquiry-generating questions and pursuing answers-is essential
activity for understanding and making progress in science. Numerous
efforts to define inquiry-based learning, however, have fallen short
of the mark. As a result, inquiry-based teaching of science is often
thought to be difficult to do and more difficult to assess.
This institute is for science teachers interested in developing
inquiry-based curricula for their science courses. Participants will
learn about the historical and social contexts of inquiry-based
teaching; examine essential elements of this teaching model; and in
a hands-on environment, learn how to revise old units or create new
units that promote scientific inquiry.
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS:
Phil Sadler, Head of the Science Education Department
Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics
Douglas Llewellyn, Teacher of Science Education and Educational Leadership
St. John Fisher College
