Teacher Training at Waquoit Bay Reserve    Summer 2008

Oceans and Coasts  June 23-27         3 Graduate credits or 67.5 PDPs

This course will introduce methods to teach about marine and coastal
science in the classroom. It will include topics and lesson ideas most
appropriate for teachers of grades 6-10.  Topics will include ocean and
coastal geology, estuaries, basic salt water chemistry, currents and
circulation, climate connections, marine life, and how technology is
used to study oceans and coasts. The course will include presentations
from research scientists on current investigations in marine and coastal
science, and lessons and guidance in how to find and use coastal data.
Participants will receive lesson plans, posters, and CDs, and will have
opportunities to practice classroom activities.


Schedule:        Monday June 23 - Thursday June 26   8:30 am - 3:30 pm
                        Friday June 27 8:30 am - 12:30 pm
                        Follow up meeting Saturday November 1,  8:00- 12:00

 Credit:             3 Graduate credits (optional) or 67.5 PDPs for 36 hours
of class time including follow up session

Credit through Framingham State College   $195
Course fee $50


Climate and the Coast       August 4 - 8      3 Graduate credits or 67.5

Climate change is one of the most important science issues of the new
century. Studying coastal climate change is especially engaging,
involving studies of how land, sea, and atmosphere affect water,
marshes, birds, fish, and shellfish. This course will present climate
topics with a special focus on marine systems. The course will include
ideas for using marine and coastal data with students as well as
opportunities and ideas for participants to carry out field
investigations.  We will hear presentations from research scientists
studying climate. Participants will receive lesson plans and a resource
CD. Most appropriate for teachers in grades 7 through 10.
Schedule: Monday August 4 through Thursday August 7, 8:00 -4:00 

Follow up meeting date on Saturday November 1, 1:00 - 4:00
