WPI is pleased to offer a variety of professional development
opportunities for middle school teachers in the summer of 2009.  All
of these opportunities are free of charge, and offer some form of
stipend,. Some even offer the potential for WPI graduate course credit
at a substantially reduced rate. For more information on the program

Inquiry-Based Bioengineering Research and Design Experiences for
Middle-School Teachers

Dates: June 24, 2009 ñ August 6, 2009 (full-time), plus a pre-program
orientation meeting (TBD), and 2 follow-up workshops during 2009/10
school year (dates and times TBD)

Locations: Life Science and Bioengineering Center at Gateway Park,
Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, MA

Details: For this program, WPI will 6 teachers from Worcester Public
Schools or the surrounding areas to participate in a 6-week long
intensive summer research experience in the Life Sciences and
Bioengineering Center at Gateway Park, a newly constructed facility
that houses all of WPI's research facilities in bioengineering.
Teachers will work alongside faculty and graduate students,
participating in high-level research projects in fields such as tissue
engineering, regenerative medicine, and infection control on
biomaterials. Teachers will receive a stipend for participation, with
$5000 being paid for the 6-week summer program.  Teachers can earn an
additional $1000 by participating in the follow-up workshops and
completing blog assignments during 2009/10 school year.

Camp Reach Middle School Teacher Staff Positions

Dates: July 19- July 31 full time (Participation the weekend of July
25-26 is optional). Pre program staff training day, July 9, 2009 (8-5
pm)

Location: Worcester Polytechnic Institute Campus, Worcester, MA

Details: Camp Reach is a two week long residential camp for middle
school girls. Three math or science middle school teachers from
Massachusetts work with the campers during their daytime hours (9am to
5pm). They are assigned to assist one team of ten campers as they work
to complete their Engineering Design Project during the two-week
program. Teachers also participate in the camp's Discovery Workshop
activities. A stipend of $2000 is provided to teachers upon completion
of the program. Lunch each day is also provided, and a minimum of 90
Professional Development Points (PDPs) will be awarded.

Building Better Backgrounds Professional Development Workshop for
Middle School Teachers

Dates: June 23- July 1

Location: Worcester Polytechnic Institute Campus, Worcester, MA

Details: Physics and Engineering Courses for grade 5-9 teachers to
provide theory, hands-on projects, and discussions around
implementation. This year's course will cover Electricity & Magnetism
with a related green engineering theme. The content is provided during
a seven-day summer workshop. The total contact hours include 45 hours
of class time and 20 hours of follow-up time. The goals of the program
are to: increase content area knowledge for grade 5-9 science and
technology teachers, to increase student performance in the sciences,
and to develop of a set of courses at WPI that can be used by
in-service or pre-service teachers towards licensure. Participating
teachers will have the opportunity to earn graduate credit for this
course at a substantially reduced tuition rate.  A stipend of $200
will be offered for participants who complete all elements of the
program.

PIMSE "Partnership in Math and Science Education" Use data to drive
your instruction with the ASSISTment System

Dates: January 2009 through fall 2009

Location: Teacher's school and WPI

Details: This program is for teachers who are new to the ASSISTment
system as well as those who have been using the ASSISTment system for
years. Teachers will participate in a graduate level class (MME 562)
for which 90% of the tuition will be paid by WPI.  Teachers will also
have a computer science graduate fellow to assist in their classroom
once a week.  Finally, participating teachers will be paid a stipend
of $35/hour for any meetings or workshops outside of school hours.
