 The Joint Spring Meeting of the APS and AAPT New England Sections
 April 4 and 5, 2008
 The United States Coast Guard Academy
 New London, CT

 The deadline for the upcoming Spring Joint Meeting of the APS and AAPT
 New England Sections has been extended until Monday, March 24 at
 5:00 p.m. EDT. Please keep this date in mind and urge your colleagues
 and students to submit their abstracts online.

 To submit an abstract, click on: http://abstracts.aps.org

 SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT REGISTRATION:  In view of security issues, online
 registration will be the only accepted method of registration. On-site
 registrations will not be permitted.

 The deadline for registration is March 24, 2008.

 The annual spring joint meeting of the NES-APS/AAPT is scheduled for
 Friday and Saturday, April 4 and 5 at The United States Coast Guard
 Academy.  The conference topic is "The Science of Homeland Security".

 The Banquet speaker will be The Honorable Harrison Schmitt, Former U.S.
 Senator and Apollo Astronaut.

 The Invited speakers include:
 Dan McKinsey (Yale University, Gamma Ray Detection),
 Joseph Schumer (Naval Research Lab, Pulsed Power Technology for the Active
      Detection of Special Nuclear Materials)
 John Luginsland (NumerEx Corporation, Simulating Directed Energy Devices -
      Advancing Technology to Protect the Homeland at the Speed of Light)
 Israel Soibelman (Assistant Head of Tactical Systems and Homeland
Protection,
      MIT - Lincoln Laboratory).
 Leah Beaulieu (Joppatowne H.S. , Joppa, MD - A Homeland Security Magnet
      High School Program)

 Several hands-on workshops have been planned on Saturday:
 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM     AAPT Workshop ($10.00)
                       "Teaching about Robotics with LEGO NXT"

 1:30 PM -- 2:30 PM    AAPT Workshop ($10.00)
                       "Using Interactive Simulation-based Virtual
                       Laboratories for Teaching Physics and Technology"

 2:30 PM -- 3:30 PM    AAPT Workshop ($10.00)
                       "Using the digital GLX datalogger in lab and lecture"

 The deadline for submission of abstracts for the contributed papers and

 There will be no on-site registration and we must be able to verify an
 attendee's institutional affiliation.  The USCGA is a U. S. military
 installation and while onboard the Academy all persons and their property
 (including vehicles) are subject to search.
