Summer Content Institute: Chemistry for Secondary Teachers

Dates: July 7-8; 11-14, 9 - 3:30pm

Site: Mount Holyoke College

Faculty: Dr. Sheila Browne, Department of Chemistry, MHC and Edward
Fitzgerald, Lab Instructor, guest lecturers

Chemistry for Secondary School Teachers will provide content-rich
professional development for middle and high school teachers. The course is
divided between chemistry content directly from the Massachusetts Frameworks
and hands-on laboratory experience that will allow participants to learn
essential laboratory techniques. Participants will do experiments and learn
the preparation necessary for these experiments to be taken back to their
classrooms. Guest speakers will include Dr. Sean Decatur, a biophysical
chemist and Head of the Department of Chemistry at Mount Holyoke; Dr. Wei
Chen, Chemical Engineering and Polymer Science, Mount Holyoke College; Doug
Smith, Chemistry teacher at South Hadley High School; and Donna Boivin,
Computer Specialist from the Springfield Public Schools. They will expand
the institute experience with discussions of how to create exploratory labs,
the scientific methods used in contemporary research and the use of online
databases to find scientific information. All of the activities will lead
to a greater depth of content knowledge in chemistry and will contribute to
the skills needed in the classroom and the knowledge needed for licensure.

For additional information, please call Gus Sayer at South Hadley Public
Schools
(538-5060) or Sue Thrasher at the Five College Public School Partnership
(256-8316).

Applicants should send a resum a description of their current teaching
responsibilities and a brief statement of their interest in the Institute
to:
