Applications Available for 2009 NASA Postdoctoral Fellowship Programs:
Applications are currently available for three postdoctoral
fellowship programs sponsored by NASA. For each of these programs,
applicants must have received their Ph.D. or equivalent degree in
2006 or later.
1) 2009 Sagan Postdoctoral Fellowship Program:
<<http://nexsci.caltech.edu/sagan/fellowship.shtml>http://nexsci.caltech.edu/sagan/fellowship.shtml>
The NASA Exoplanet Science Institute announces the introduction of
the Sagan Postdoctoral Fellowship Program and solicits applications
for fellowships to begin in the fall of 2009.
The Sagan Fellowships will support outstanding recent postdoctoral
scientists to conduct independent research that is broadly related
to the science goals of the NASA Exoplanet Exploration program. The
primary goal of missions within this program is to discover and
characterize planetary systems and Earth-like planets around nearby
stars.
The deadline for applications and letters of reference is Nov. 6,
2008, at 4 p.m. PST. Offers will be made before Feb.1, 2009, and new
appointments are expected to begin on or about Sept.1, 2009.
Inquiries about the Sagan Fellowships may be directed to the Sagan
Fellowship program director, Dr. Dawn Gelino at
<file:///C:/Program%20Files/Common%20Files/Microsoft%20Shared/Stationery/dawn@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>dawn@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
<<mailto:dawn@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>mailto:dawn@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> .
2) 2009 Einstein Postdoctoral Fellowship Program:
<<http://cxc.harvard.edu/fellows/>http://cxc.harvard.edu/fellows/>
The Einstein Postdoctoral Fellowship Program provides an opportunity
for highly qualified, recent postdoctoral scientists to conduct
independent research that is broadly related to the scientific
mission of the NASA Physics of the Cosmos program as addressed by
any of the missions of this program. These include high-energy
astrophysics relevant to the Chandra, Fermi (formerly GLAST),
XMM-Newton, INTEGRAL, and IXO (formerly Constellation-X) missions;
cosmological investigations relevant to the Planck and JDEM
missions; and gravitational astrophysics relevant to the LISA
mission.
This research can include new observations or archival studies with
these missions as well as related theoretical studies and studies of
sources from these missions at other wavelengths. The main criterion
for proposal selection is the contribution of the proposed research
program to the scientific return of the Physics of the Cosmos
missions.
The deadline for applications and letters of reference is Nov. 7,
2008, at 5 p.m. EST. Offers will be made before Feb.1, 2009, and new
appointments are expected to begin in September 2009. Inquiries
about the Einstein Fellowships may be directed to
<file:///C:/Program%20Files/Common%20Files/Microsoft%20Shared/Stationery/fellows@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>fellows@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

3) 2009 Hubble Fellowship Program:
<<http://www.stsci.edu/institute/org/spd/hubble-fellowship/ao-2009>http://www.stsci.edu/institute/org/spd/hubble-fellowship/ao-2009>
The Hubble Fellowship Program provides an opportunity for highly
qualified, recent postdoctoral scientists to conduct independent
research that is broadly related to the NASA Cosmic Origins
scientific goals as addressed by any of the missions in this
program: the Hubble Space Telescope: Spitzer Space Telescope:
Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, or SOFIA; the
Herschel Space Observatory; and the James Webb Space Telescope.
An application for the fellowship consists of a research proposal
and supporting documentation. The deadline for applications is Nov.
6, 2008. Offers will be made before Feb.1, 2009, and new
appointments are expected to begin in September 2009. Inquiries
about the Hubble Fellowships may be directed to

ALL-DAY Biotechnology workshop: - The Massachusetts College of
Liberal Arts (MCLA),
in collaboration with the Berkshire STEM Pipeline and the
Massachusetts Association of Biology Teachers (MABT), is offering an
ALL-DAY Biotechnology workshop lead by Shahira Badran, Assistant
Professor & Biotechnology Program Coordinator, Bunker Hill Community
College, Paul King, Instructor, Massasoit Community College, and Ann
Billetz, Professor, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. This
workshop is part of the STEM Science Seminars taking place this fall.
Date: Saturday, November 8, 2008
Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Location: Biology Lab Venable Hall at MCLA
This ALL-DAY Biotechnology workshop will consist of a hands-on lab
featuring biotechnology techniques such as isolation of DNA, real
time PCR, electrophoresis, and a presentation explaining the
underlying concepts and real-life applications of these techniques.
In addition, the workshop will address the different applications and
career opportunities of the biotech industry. Teachers will receive
handouts and information on other related activities and biotech
online resources.
Biotechnology is a thriving industry and teachers need effective
teaching tools such as the kinds of hands-on activities featured in
our workshop to investigate and discover the exciting career
opportunities in the industry for their students.
The Biotechnology workshop is open to teachers 8-12, and
undergraduate professors. The cost is $35.00; this includes lunch and
refreshments. Pre-registration is required; capacity is limited.
