Dear Faithful members of the NEACT e-mail list:
As you might recall, some time ago the Executive Board voted that--rather
than have a separate list of e-mail addresses available to the president for
messages to the entire membership, and this one for discussion among the
members who joined voluntarily--all members should be added to this existing
discussion list. For various reasons, this has not yet come to pass.
Several announcements have been made inviting members who do not wish to
belong to such an all-inclusive list to be excised from it before it is
effected. Happily for NEACT, not one such request has yet been received.

I do hope to “take the plunge” and try this expansion soon. We’ll be going
from the present 65 “volunteer” list members—you--to over 400 subscribers.
Thus you can expect a rapid and perhaps substantial increase in the volume of
messages on this list.

The list is now a “closed-post” list, meaning that only subscribers may
post a message to it. However, the list is also “open,” meaning anyone
[including non-NEACT members] may subscribe. Lastly, the list is presently
“un-moderated” -- posted messages are automatically sent to all list members.
Moving to >400 subscribers will probably lead to some inappropriate or
off-topic messages. Should that happen inordinately, I shall have to change
the list to a “moderated” one, which will mean that every message will have to
be approved by the moderator before it goes out to the list. A move to
“moderated” will mean a delay in the posting/promulgation of your message.
That delay could be in seconds or weeks, depending on whether I was on line
when the message was first submitted, or away for a couple of weeks. For
purposes of speedy communication [and what’s left of my sanity], I would much
prefer to leave the list an open one, as it has been.
The list owner [yours truly] has the authority to place any member on
“tempban,” where the person is temporarily banned from posting to the list, or
to outright blacklist the person, if s/he persists in posting inappropriate
messages. I intend to use that authority.

So please “hang in there” as we try this expanded experiment in better and
faster communication for our members to help one another. I shall try mightily
to minimize any problematic messages, but we might all have to endure a flurry
of messages until things settle down. Thanks very much for your wonderful
behavior on what has been a nice quiet, but useful, list. We’ll see how quiet
it remains [hopefully not too quiet, to be sure].

One last reminder: any reply to this message, or any message to an e-mail
list, goes to everyone on the list. If you wish to communicate with an
individual sender, you have to change the address accordingly.

Thank you very much for your faith in the NEACT e-mail list.

Best wishes,
Steve
