      Police take Pinochet's mug shot 



     
             
            General Pinochet is under house arrest 
      Chile's former ruler Augusto Pinochet has been fingerprinted and 
photographed by police, as part of his indictment over killings and 
disappearances. 
      The general's picture was taken from the front and the side at his 
mansion in the Chilean capital Santiago. 

      A lawyer for 90-year-old Gen Pinochet called it "an affront to a former 
president of the republic". 

      On Monday the supreme court ruled he was fit to stand trial over the 1975 
disappearance of political opponents. 

      The court rejected an appeal saying he should not be sent for trial 
because of poor health. 

      In the past, courts have dismissed cases against Gen Pinochet on medical 
grounds. 

      He has been under house arrest in Santiago since being indicted on 24 
November by Judge Victor Montiglio - the same judge who ordered his details be 
taken on Wednesday. 

      The indictment relate to a case that became known as Operation Colombo, 
in which at least 119 people were believed to have been abducted and later 
murdered. 

      The former regime said all had died in clashes between rival opposition 
groups. 

      More than 3,000 people were killed when Gen Pinochet was in power from 
1973 to 1990. 

      The general is also facing tax evasion charges in connection to his 
foreign bank accounts, but this is the first time he has been fingerprinted and 
photographed
